NORMAL, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team defeated Illinois State University Friday, Jan. 21, 193.950-192.650. The Eagles move to 2-1 overall this season, and are 1-0 in Mid-American Conference competitions.
"This team did an amazing job despite the score," said Head Coach Katie Minasola. "They stuck together and had some amazing performances. I am so proud of their ability to maintain focus throughout the meet."
How It Happened
Eastern started on bars, scoring 48.575, and trailed Illinois State's 48.725. Junior Molly Parris (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson) and sophomore Anna Grace McCullough (Birmingham, Ala.-Alabama Connections Academy) led the team on the apparatus, both scoring 9.750 and tying for third. On vault, The Redbirds widened their lead as the Green and White were behind 97.200-96.600. Senior Kara Roberts (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) topped the vault lineup, scoring 9.750 and placing sixth.
After the halfway mark, Eastern Michigan turned up the heat on floor, totaling 48.625, and taking the lead over Illinois State, 145.225-144.300. Roberts again led EMU, scoring 9.800 and placing first. The Eagles closed the meet on beam and saved the best for last, scoring 48.725. Freshman Ella Chemotti (Canton, Mich.-Canton) earned a career-high 9.850 and claimed first place. Sophomore Raisa Boris (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Park Center) hit 9.800, while senior Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill,-Carl Sandburg) scored 9.775, as the Green and White claimed the top-three spots in the event, and came away with the win, 193.950-192.650.
