YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team is ready for its first home meet of the season and first meet inside the newly named George Gervin GameAbove Center Friday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.
Eastern (0-1; 0-0 MAC) started the 2022 season at Iowa, where the Hawkeyes came out on top, 195.950. Central Michigan (0-1; 0-0 MAC) began its campaign in similar fashion, taking on another Big Ten opponent in Illinois and losing 193.425-194.325, Jan. 9.

ATOP THE MAC PACK: After one week of gymnastics action, Eastern leads the Mid-American Conference on beam (48.775), bars (48.525), and is second on floor (48.750). Overall, EMU totaled the second-highest score in the conference in week one (194.100), only to be outdone by Northern Illinois who earned 194.550.
Individually, sophomore Anna Grace McCullough is tied for first in the MAC on bars, with 9.850. Junior Hadyn Crossen, is second in all-around after taking first place at Iowa, Jan. 8, and posting a score of 38.850.
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP HERE: Kicking off her sophomore campaign at Iowa, Jan. 8, Anna Grace McCullough put on a show on bars. McCullough scored a 9.850 for her first collegiate score on the apparatus, and tied for second place. The Birmingham, Ala. native then posted two scores of 9.750 on beam and floor.
The sophomore currently ranks second in the Mid-American Conference on bars after week one.
HADYN HANDLES BUSINESS: Junior Hadyn Crossen took care of business at Iowa, Jan. 8, claiming first place in the all-around competition. Crossen scored 38.850, highlighted by her 9.800 on beam, which tied the junior for third place on the event. Furthermore, the Carmel, Ind. native's all-around total puts her second in the Mid-American Conference after one week of action.
PARRIS DOES IT ALL: Junior Molly Parris made her all-around debut at Iowa, Jan. 8. Last season, Parris came back from an injury that ended her freshman season and went on to become a Mid-American Conference Vault Champion.
The junior totaled 38.625, which included a high of 9.750 on floor. The meet was the first time Parris had competed on floor in her college career.
LAST TIME AGAINST CENTRAL: Last season, Eastern Michigan traveled to Mount Pleasant for the CMU Quad, March 13, and came in second place in the meet with a score of 196.100. Central Michigan topped Eastern's season-best score by putting up 196.425.
In the meet that featured host Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Ball State, and the Eagles, EMU saw former Eagle Jada Rondeau tie the second-highest all-around score in program history, 39.475. Rondeau tied teammate Shannon Gregory for first on beam with a 9.900, a career-high for Gregory. Then-sophomore Hadyn Crossen also earned a career-high 9.925 on vault, also claiming first place.
CHIPPEWAS IN YPSI: The last time Central Michigan traveled to Ypsilanti, Jan. 19, 2020, the Chippewas came out on top, 195.100-194.175. Additionally, the last time Eastern beat Central at home was March 10, 2016, prior to the Katie Minasola era. In that meet, the Eagles totaled 196.250 to CMU's 194.125.
Furthermore, Eastern is 4-6 against Central in the last ten matchups between the two.
REIGNING, DEFENDING, MAC CHAMPS: The trophy came back to Ypsilanti as Eastern captured its fourth Mid-American Conference Championship, March 20, 2021, at Western Michigan's University Arena. The Eagles totaled 195.900 to defeat the six other conference teams competing. This was the Green and White's first conference championship since 2017, and the first for Head Coach Katie Minasola.
KEY RETURNERS: Eastern Michigan returns all but three faces to the gym for the 2022 season. Graduate student Cali Harden is returning for her fifth year, while seniors Caitlin Satler, Shannon Gregory, Kara Roberts, Charlotte Reynolds, and Carly Kosanovich look to leave their final marks on the program. Satler, who was named MAC Co-Specialist of the Year last season will attempt to continue her dominance on beam. Juniors Molly Parris and Hadyn Crossen will also be back after finishing first on vault and second in all-around, respectively, at the conference meet a season ago. Additionally, now-sophomores Raisa Boris and Anna Grace McCullough will have the opportunity to make more of a splash this season, having gained valuable experience competing last season.
NEW FACES IN THE GYM: The Green and White have seven new faces in the gym this year, having brought in six freshman and one transfer. The freshman class consists of Gianna Antonio, Cassie Bergin, Jade Blankenship, Ella Chemotti, Alana Fisher, and Emma Lewis. Antonio was the Level 10 Michigan State Floor Champion in 2021, while Blankenship trained at Bull City Gymnastics under two former EMU gymnasts in Monica Davis (Lucas), 2006-09, and Lindsey Shilling, 2007-10. Chemotti was a Level 10 Michigan State Beam Champion, and a three-time Level 10 National qualifier.
Transferring from Central Michigan, Mayleigh Vanderbeek makes the trip south to Ypsilanti with two years of eligibility. Vanderbeek participated solely on beam for the Chippewas and earned a career-high 9.850 at Bowling Green, Feb. 21, 2020.
NEW YEAR, SAME GOAL: The Eagles look to repeat as Mid-American Conference Champions in 2022, but also have their eyes set on NCAA Regionals. Having qualified as a team for just the third time in program history last season, Head Coach Katie Minasola has set the goal for her squad that the regional meet should be a yearly occurrence.
EAGLES ON ESPN3: For the fifth consecutive season, the Eagles will have their home meets broadcast on ESPN3. This season, fans will be able to watch their Eagles compete against Central Michigan, Jan. 14, in the EMU Quad, Jan. 28, and versus Northern Illinois, March 13. Furthermore, the Mid-American Conference Championships, March 19, will also be on ESPN3, as Eastern Michigan hosts.
ON THE HORIZON: Eastern heads to Normal, Ill. to compete against Illinois State Friday, Jan. 21. The action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN3.
