Cross Country Opens Season Strong at Bowling Green

Both teams combined for eight top-5 finishers at the Mel Brodt Open

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country teams showcased its depth today, Sept. 3, at the Mel Brodt Open in Bowling Green, Ohio. On Bowling Green State's 5K course, both squads saw high placements from their harriers, including eight top-10 finishes across both teams.
"It was a solid day for us," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "Both the men and women came away with some nice positives. It's a starting point and we hope to keep improving each week."
On the men's side, the Green and Yellow dominated BGSU and Toledo, earning a perfect score of 15 and seeing six-straight Eagles cross the finish line before any other runners. Senior Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Lincoln) paced EMU with a time of 15:01.4 in the 5K race, followed by sophomore Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge) in 15:16.5 and freshman Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste") in 15:18.6. The dominant performance bested Toledo and Bowling Green, who scored 45 and 84 points, respectively.
"It was a really good start to the season," said Head Coach Mark Rinker. "We wanted to get out and run controlled early and build momentum. We were able to execute well. I'm excited, we have a lot of work to do but I think the guys set the tone for the year, which was the goal."
Sophomore Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) picked up right where she left off in 2020 with a fourth-place finish in 17:51.1. Joining Davies in the top-10 was sophomore Lexi Seifert (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), who clocked in at 18:18.5 to notch sixth overall. Toledo won the women's 5K with 30 points, followed by Bowling Green (49), EMU (53), and Western Michigan (97).
