The Eagles head to South Bend for the Joe Piane Invitational, Oct. 1

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After using last week to recover and train, the Eastern Michigan University cross country program is set for a trip to South Bend, Ind. for the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame Friday, Oct. 1. The men's team will be split with eight harriers taking on the Blue Division five-mile race at 11:15 a.m. while others will compete in the Open Division five-miler at 12:45 p.m. In addition, the women's team will wrap up the trip with the Gold Division 5K at 1:30 p.m.

The Fighting Irish's men's program currently holds the top spot in Great Lakes Region and second in the nation according to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Last season, the Blue and Gold finished second overall at the national meet with 193 points. Furthermore, ND's women's program is slotted third in the USTFCCCA's regional ranking.

Both EMU teams are ranked in the Great lakes with the men sitting in eighth and the women round out the top-15.

Most recently, junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) paced the Green and Yellow harriers at the FSU XC Open 8K, crossing the finish line in 24:03.7 for seventh, Sept. 17. His impressive performance earned him Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week honors for the first time in his career, Sept. 22. Additionally, sophomore Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) led her squad with a 6K time of 22:24.3 to notch 43rd.

The women's team last competed at Notre Dame in 2018 where they notched eighth-place as a team with 262 points. There, former Eagle Syndey Meyers took 14th in the 5K with a time of 17:09.5. Meanwhile, the men's team placed 12th overall with 326 points at the 2017 Notre Dame Invitational, Sept. 29. Former Eagle Abel Flores was the first Eastern runner to finish the five-mile race, clocking in at 24:17.3 to round out the top-25.

Following Friday's meet, the Eagles will hit the road again for Wisconsin's Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Oct. 15. The Madison, Wis.-based meet is currently scheduled for 12 p.m. EST.

The Eastern Michigan University cross country program will host the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 30, at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti, Mich.
