VERONA, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) finished the Badger Invitational much like he started – on fire. The Rockford, Ill. native poured in four birdies on the day to finish the event with a career-best 216 (69-77-70) at the University Ridge Golf Course. His 13th-place showing marked the first time in his young career that he has collected a top-15 finish.
Illinois State hung on to earn the tourney win with an eight-under 856. Sam Houston (-5, 859) and Cincinnati (-4, 860) were the only other programs to finish under par.
Host Wisconsin finished fourth at three-over 867 on their home course, while Northern Illinois placed fifth just one shot back at four-over 868.
Teams six through 10 were comprised of Iowa State (+6, 870), High Point (+10, 874), Abilene Christian (+12, 876), Eastern Michigan (+13, 877), and South Dakota State (+17, 881).
Coastal Carolina (+19, 883) took 11th followed by Augusta (+21, 885), Toledo (+22, 886), and Xavier (+42, 906).
The Eagles will be back in action at the Mountaineer Invitational. West Virginia will host the event at the Pete Dye Golf Club, Oct. 4-5.
How It Happened
Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) fired a 74 to finish tied for 34th with a 220 (77-69-74). Classmate Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) was just one shot back in 39th with a 221 (73-73-75), while sophomore Max Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) tied for 52nd with a 225 (80-70-75). Sophomore Patrick Deardorff (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) rounded out the scoring with the lowest 54-hole tally of his career at 227 (76-76-75).
