The Eagles turn to Western Michigan, Sept. 30

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In a sunny Sunday matinee match, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team dropped its Mid-American Conference home opener against Miami, 2-1.

The result brings the Eagles' overall record to 1-6-2 on the season and their MAC record to 0-1-1.

"We had a great start to the match, scoring a goal in the third minute, and a fantastic save from Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Teresa) on a Miami penalty kick," Head Coach Scott Hall said postgame. "But, in critical moments of the game we have to elevate our play and our will to win."

Sophomore Tiffanie Hollingsworth (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon East) notched her first collegiate goal while sophomore Amanda Cripps (Bradford, Ontario-Trinity Catholic) earned her first assist of the season. Seniors Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay)Haley Tausend (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington), and Cripps paced EMU with three shots apiece.

How It Happened
In the third minute, Hollingsworth scored into the bottom left corner of the net on a cross from Cripps to give Eastern the early one-goal advantage.

The Eagles would hold on to the lead until the RedHawks netted the equalizer in the 29th minute. Miami would get another scoring chance when the RedHawks were awarded a penalty kick on a handball violation by the Eagles in the 70th minute, but a diving save from Abbotts kept the match knotted at one.

Miami would go on to score the game-deciding goal in the 88th minute to defeated EMU, 2-1.
