TOKYO, Japan (EMUEagles.com) — Former Eastern Michigan University track and field standout Brittni Mason displayed her veteran relay skills in the 4x100m relay at the 2020 Summer Paralympics today, Sept. 3. in Tokyo, Japan. The four-time Mid-American Conference 4x100 Champion helped Team USA top the rest of the world in the mixed event with a blazing time of 45.52, setting a world record in the process.

"It was such an honor for Brittni to be selected for the Paralympic Relay team in this, her first time competing at the games," said Associate Head Coach Chris Best. "I know how excited she was to able to run and now she gets to leave with a gold medal and World Record! Now it's time to carry this momentum into the 200m prelim and finals."

In the preliminary round, T12 athlete Noah Malone ran the opening leg of the race followed by Mason. The Richmond Heights, Ohio native produced a solid second leg effort to widen Team USA's lead before tagging teammate Nick Mayhugh of the T37 class. Tatyana McFadden sprinted the anchor leg for Team USA, crossing the finish line in 46.72 for first in the heat and second overall. China registered a time of 46.02 in the first heat to produce the best time of the event to set a then-world record.

Team USA kept the same lineup order for the medal race and executed it to perfection. Malone sprinted out of the blocks to give his team the early advantage before Mason emptied the tank in the second leg of the race. Mayhugh ran a solid third leg to maintain Team USA's comfortable lead before tagging McFadden for the anchor leg. The People's Republic of China attempted to close the gap on Team USA in the 100 meters, but McFadden held of the opposition, crossing the finish line in 45.52 for a world record and paralympic record. For Mason, she now owns two world records after setting the T47 100m record at 2019 World Para Athletics Championships with an 11.89 clip.

Up next for Mason, she will wrap up her time in Tokyo with an appearance in the T47 preliminary 200m race tonight, Sept. 3, with the first heat taking place at 10:54 p.m. ET. The Ohio product is set to compete in the second heat at 11:00 p.m. ET where she boasts a season-best time of 25.14. The top-two finishers in each heat automatically qualify for the final round as well as the next two fastest times overall.
