EMU will compete against Loyola-Chicago on Sunday, Sept. 19
MACOMB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team dropped the first of its two-game road trip to Western Illinois, 2-1, at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on Friday afternoon.
Both scores for Western Illinois came on penalty shot chances after EMU committed a handball violation in the first instance, and a foul in the other. The Leathernecks' attack tallied 24 total shots (nine shots on target), out-shooting the Eagles, 24-10.
Sophomore Amanda Cripps (Bradford, Ontario-Trinity Catholic) netted the Green and White's lone goal on a crossing chance from senior Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore-Anchor Bay).
"We scored a clinical goal early in the match and did a great job limiting a very high-powered attack of any decent chances on goal," Head Coach Scott Hall said. "We were very unlucky to have two penalty kick chances awarded against us, especially an opportunity in the final two minutes of the match. Sometimes, that's the way soccer goes."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern Michigan got off to a one-goal lead when Cripps scored into the bottom right corner of the net off a cross from Shira in the 33rd minute.
The Eagles would keep the lead for only one minute. The Leatherneck's attack pressured and forced a penalty kick after a handball violation on EMU inside the box in the 34th minute. Western Illinois scored into the left side of the net to knot the match at one goal apiece.
Late in the second half, 89th minute, a foul in the box on Eastern led to another penalty kick opportunity for Western Illinois. The Leathernecks converted the try into the bottom left corner of the net for the game-deciding score.
GAME NOTES
» Cripps' score was her first of the 2021 season in her first appearance since returning from injury. The goal is Cripps' 11th of her career and her 24th career point as an Eagle.

» Sophomore Rebecca Przybylo (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) tallied a career-high seven saves on 24 total shots faced on Friday. The keeper now has 18 saves on the season.
