Saturday’s regatta will be EMU’s regular-season finale
MADISON, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team will conclude its 2021 spring regular season schedule with a duel at the No. 20-ranked University of Wisconsin Saturday, May 1. The races will take place on Lake Mendota beginning at 9:15 a.m.
"Going to race Wisconsin, we are going to race their open-weight team. Their open-weights have been racing a lot against the Big Ten, ACC, and other Power 5 competition," said Head Coach Kemp Savage. "They look like they're a little faster than Michigan State so we are trying to see how small we can get the gap. We've talked a lot about you don't get fast by racing people who you can easily beat. So we are trying to see more of the top-20 teams with our goal to be in the top 20. I think the only way to make it into the top 20 is to race against teams who are faster than you and see if you can rise to the occasion."
Saturday's regatta will be the first time Eastern Michigan races against Wisconsin in a regular-season duel-style format.
EMU has close ties with the Badgers as assistant coach Julie Quoss was a standout walkon for Wisconsin's rowing team from 2001-05. She was a member of Wisconsin's V8 that twice competed at the NCAA Championships after a five-year hiatus. Her boats also medaled at the Big Ten Championships and Central Sprints. Quoss earned First and Second Team CRCA All-Central Region honors and was a National Scholar Athlete.
The Eagles will begin the day against UW at 9:15 a.m. with the 3V8+ race at 2000 meters. The 1V4+ 2000-meter race will follow at 9:30 a.m. The 2V8+ race is slated for 9:45 a.m., while the 1V8+ race will conclude the competition at 10 a.m.
Spectators are welcome at the race, but Wisconsin encourages fans to abide by safety guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a path along the lake shore with the finish line at the southeast corner of Lake Mendota. Fans and parents are not allowed in or around the boathouse before, during, or after the races.
