Soccer Hosts Northern Illinois for Senior Day

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Taking sole possession of first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division with a 1-0 win over Central Michigan, April 1, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team returns home to Scicluna Field to host Northern Illinois University in its annual Senior Day celebration, April 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

ALL FOR AMANDA: Scoring her third goal of the season at Central Michigan, April 1, sophomore Amanda Cripps not only recorded the game-winner for the Eagles, but also eclipsed the 20-career points mark. Now sitting at 21, the Bradford, Ontario native is the third active member of the EMU roster to have at least 20 career points (Sabrina McNeill - 63, Lindsey Shira - 25).
In addition, the goal marked the 10th of her career, making her one-of-two active Eagles with at least that many (McNeill - 25).
NOTHING PAST ABBOTTS: Despite a flurry of shots from Central Michigan, senior goalkeeper Chelsea Abbotts and the Eagle defense were impeccable, helping to seal the 1-0 win for Eastern Michigan, April 1. In net, Abbotts recorded a season-high eight saves en route to her second shutout of the season.
Previously this season, Abbotts blanked Northern Illinois, tallying three saves in the 3-0 win, March 14.
IN THE HUNT: With the elimination of the Mid-American Conference Soccer Tournament due to onset issues brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the league decided to go back to a divisional structure, with the two top finishers from each division meeting in a championship game to determine the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
As of April 2, the Eagles have taken first place in the West Division with a 5-2 overall record after breaking away from Central Michigan, who is now in third at 4-3. Ball State moved from first place to second after Thursday, with a 4-1-1 ledger.
RETURN TO SCICLUNA: For the first time this season, Eastern Michigan will get to play on Scicluna Field. Having called the St. Joe's Sports Dome "home" for the first four home games of its season due to starting the season in March, the Eagles will conclude its regular-season home slate outdoors.
Overall, Eastern Michigan is 106-55-28 in 21 seasons playing on Scicluna Field.
SENIOR DAY CELLY: The last regular season home game will mark a special day for eight Eastern Michigan soccer seniors: Lauren Cimino, Marla Cobetto, Mabel Dunn, Alia Frederick, Parys Kerr, Kennady Kuhlman, Sabrina McNeill, and Tessa Osborne. These players have been accomplished on and off the field in their time with the program, helping the team to 30 wins to-date over the past four seasons, including a berth in the 2019 MAC Tournament Championship game.
While they will be celebrated Sunday, April 4, the eight will push for a second MAC Championship game berth as they complete the remainder of their spring slate on the road.
PUTTING THEM ON FRAME: While Eastern Michigan's opponents may hold the advantage in shots taken through the first seven games of the season (104-87), the Green and White lead its opponents where it counts: in shots on goal. The Eagles have put 53 of its shots on target, compared to opponents' 40, resulting in a .609-.385 advantage in shots on goal percentage.
CREATING CHANCES: Proving that everyone can create scoring chances on the field, seven of Eastern Michigan's eight assists so far this season have all been recorded by different players - Haley Tausend (vs. CMU, March 4), Alia Frederick (at NIU, March 14), Kennady Kuhlman (at NIU, March 14 and vs. WMU, March28), Marla Cobetto (vs. Toledo, March 18), Lindsey Shira (vs. Toledo, March 18), Amanda Cripps (vs. Ball State, March 21), and Sabrina McNeill (vs. WMU, March 28). Kuhlman became the first Eagle to record multiple assists this season with her helper to Lexy Alston on the game-winner, vs. WMU, March 28.
SERIES HISTORY: Eastern Michigan holds a dominant advantage in the all-time series between the Eagles and Huskies, compiling a 18-5-3 record in those meetings. The Green and White are unbeaten against NIU at home, holding an 8-0-3 mark, and are 10-4 when taking on the Huskies away from Ypsilanti.
Eastern has won the last four meetings between the two sides, while Northern's last victory came in 2-1 fashion in DeKalb, Ill., Sept. 25, 2016.
LAST MEETING: Led by three Eagles all recording their first points of the season, Eastern Michigan took down Northern Illinois, 3-0, March 14, in Mid-American Conference action at the NIU Soccer Complex. The victory marked 200 wins for Head Coach Scott Hall.
Sabrina McNeill and Kylie Frantz each found the back of the net for the first time in 2021 during the first 45 minutes, while McNeill added her second of the game with 12 minutes to go for the 3-0 Eagle win. Chelsea Abbotts notched three saves en route to her first clean sheet of the season.

Sabrina McNeill found the back of the net just five minutes in to put the Eagles up, 1-0. NIU found the equalizer in the 33rd minute, sending the game into the break tied at one. Lindsey Shira found the game-winner in the 62nd minute, while Amanda Cripps added an insurance goal in the 79th minute to close out the game, 3-1.
ON THE HORIZON: The Eagles will head to Muncie, Ind. for a rematch with Mid-American Conference West Division rival Ball State, Sunday, April 11. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
EMU was scheduled to play Toledo Thursday, April 8, but the conference announced that the game would be postponed. An attempt will be made to reschedule the match at a later date.
