AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – We all know that old saying, "save the best for last." That proved to be the case for the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team in its final regular season tune up before next week's Mid-American Conference Championships, as the team posted its best 18-hole mark and overall team finish at the Akron Invitational, April 17.
Head Coach Stephanie Jenning's crew fired a final round 298, the program's lowest single-round tally since a 297 at the Low Country Invitational, March 2, 2020. EMU finished with a 604 (306-298) in second-place, six shots behind the University of Indianapolis' winning tally of 598 (296-302) on the par-71, 6,265-yard Portage Country Club setup.
It was EMU's best team showing since taking home the championship at the Low Country Invitational just prior to the 2019-20 season cancellation.
Four Eagles finished inside the top-12 spots, led once again by sophomore Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) in a tie for fifth with a 149 (74-75). Loberg's 36-hole tally is a career-best, bettering a 150 she had last week at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, April 10-11. Overall, it is tied for the 20th-lowest two round score in program history and the lowest since Preaw Sripatrprasite carded a 144 (72-72) at the 2020 Low Country Invitational.
Freshman Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) picked up her first career top-10 finish with a 151 (76-75) to tie for eighth. Her final round 75 was a career-low, besting a 76 that she shot on the opening day. Senior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) and freshman Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) each posted identical rounds of 78 and 74 to tie for 11th with a 152. For each it was the second time this season they had notched a top-15 showing.
Freshman Tatyana Nyambane (Nairobi, Kenya-Nord Anglia International School Dubai) got into the fun to shave eight strokes off her 36-hole career-best to post a 164 (84-80) in a tie for 35th.
Eastern Michigan next travels to Silver Lake, Ohio, for the MAC Championships, April 23-24, at Silver Lake Country Club.
