WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – After a pleasant morning round, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team trudged its way through a rainy second round of the Boilermaker Invitational before the event was suspended due to darkness at 8:35 p.m. EMU and a handful of other teams will resume on Sunday morning with the final round to follow.
Overall, Eastern posted a 294 and is five-over in the second round in 10th-place. Indiana holds down the top-spot with a 566 (290-286), while No. 47 Kent State (295), Purdue (570), No. 6 Illinois (571), and Minnesota (573) round out the top-five.
The Kampen Course at Purdue is hard enough under normal conditions, however, the breeze and rain in the afternoon did not make scoring easy. Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) is tied for 29th with a 72, while classmate Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) added a 76 in a tie for 44th.
Redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) notched a 75 in the first round, while senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) racked up a 76. Rounding out the lineup, freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) posted an 71 in the first round.
There is also an individual event running at the same time on the adjacent Ackerman-Allen Golf Course. Two Eagles are competing in that tournament. Freshman Max Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) is tied for 14th with a 145 (71-74), while redshirt junior Tony Fuentes (East Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing) sits in 29th with a 151 (75-76).
Round three of the Boilermaker Invitational will take place following the conclusion of round two tomorrow morning. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
