ST. SIMMONS ISLAND, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team posted a 12th-place finish among 16 teams after a combined team total of 880 (292-294-294) at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island today, March 9, at the par-72, 7,060-yard Sea Island Plantation Course.
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St.Joseph's Catholic) and redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) paced the Eagles tying for 42nd-place. Celone finished with a 220 (73-71-76), and Mason posted a 73-72-75 over the three-day invitational.
Freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) moved up three spots from day two to tie for 57th with a score of 223 (76-76-71). Additionally, Smith's 71 in the final day marks a round career-low.
Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) posted a 224 (70-82-72) for a tie for 59th, while classmate Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) rounded out the lineup with a 234 (81-75-78) and tied for 72nd.
Iowa claimed the Spartan Collegiate title with a score of 851 (285-289-277), while No. 39 Notre Dame and No. 47 Georgia Southern tied for second with 852, respectively. Kansas State followed the Fighting Irish and Eagles to finish fourth with an 859, while Northwestern, host Michigan State, and Ohio State rounded out the top-five with an 860, respectively.
Iowa's Mac McClear notched the individual title with a 206 (66-75-65), while teammate Alex Schaake finished second (209).
Eastern Michigan will be back in action Monday, March 15 for the two-day Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz.
