PHOENIX, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St. Joseph's Catholic) fired an opening round 67 to lead the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team at the GCU Invitational Monday, March 15. Celone's 67 is tied for the second-lowest round in his career and bettered only by a 66 at the Hawkeye Invitational, April 20, 2019.
Celone is tied atop the leaderboard on the par 71, 7,176-yard GCU Championship Golf Course with Wichita State's Zac Owens with a three-under 139 (67-72). The Long Sault, Ontario, Canada product carded five birdies in the first round and followed it up with three more in the day's second round.
Overall, the Eagles (281-288=569) are just one shot off the pace set back host Grand Canyon (280-288=568). Rounding out the top-five are Wichita State (572), North Dakota State (573), CSU - Fullerton (574), and Pacific (574).
Redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) also resides inside the top-10 with back-to-back rounds of par or better for a one-under 141 (71-70). Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) is tied for 19th with a 143 (70-73). Freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) and sophomore Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) finished up the team's scoring with a 146 (73-73) and a 148 (75-73), respectively.
Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Max Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) notched rounds of 75 and 70 in his first collegiate action.
Eastern Michigan returns to the course Tuesday, March 16, at 1 p.m. MST.
