PHOENIX, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) collected his third career top-10 showing Tuesday, March 16, as he finished in third-place at the GCU Invitational. The Toronto, Ontario native posted rounds of 71, 70, and 70 for his best-ever finish with a 54-hole total of 211 on the par 71, 7,207-yard GCU Golf Course.
Despite being just one shot off the lead after the opening round, Eastern was unable to keep pace with a late charge by Wichita State and Southern Mississippi. WSU claimed the top-spot with a 862 (280-292-290), while USM improved six positions to take second with a 864 (291-286-287). EMU finished fourth with a 867 (281-288-298), one shot shy of host Grand Canyon (280-288-298=866).
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) collected his 12th top-20 showing, posting a 76 to finish tied for 11th with a 215 (67-72-76). Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) found the same success to finish in tied for 15th with a 216 (70-73-73). Sophomore Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) rounded out the scoring with a 227 (75-73-79) and a 230 (73-73-84), respectively.
In his first collegiate tournament, redshirt freshman Max Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) posted a 221 (75-70-76) to tie for 42nd.
Eastern hops back into action March 29-30 at the Craft Farms Intercollegiate in Gulf Shores, Ala.
