Women's Golf Moves Up On Day Two of Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team ascended seven-spots on the leaderboard Monday, March 1, at the Kiawah Island Classic, as the Eagles shaved 17 strokes off its opening round total. Eastern posted a 306 in the second round of the three-day event at the par 72, 5,958 yard Oak Point Golf Club. Overall, EMU resides in a three-way tie with Longwood and Lipscomb for 30th-place with a 629 (323-306).
Sophomore Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) and freshman Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) led the charge, carding career-best rounds of 72 and 75, respectively. Loberg's round was a career-best for the Bend, Ore. native, who bettered her previous standard of 72 set at the Rio Verde Invitational, Feb. 22, 2020, and again at the Low Country Invitational, March 3, 2020. Meanwhile, Watson improved two strokes from her collegiate debut yesterday with a 77.
Senior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio- Anthony Wayne) notched a three-stroke improvement in the second round to finish with a 79, while freshman Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) marked an improvement from an 84 to an 80. Paige Zolciak (Perrysburg, Ohio-St. Ursula Academy) rounded out the lineup with a back-to-back 87 for a two-day total of 174.
Playing as an individual, freshman Tatyana Nyambane (Nairobi, Kenya-Nord Anglia International School Dubai) continued EMU's trend for improvement, taking six shots off her debut to finish the round with an 83.
Dallas Baptist holds a commanding 18 stroke edge heading into the final round, as DBU is 11-under for the tournament with a 569 (292-277). Northern Illinois is in second with a 587 (294-293), three strokes ahead of third-place East Tennessee State (590) and four strokes clear of Murray State and Stetson, who are tied for fourth at 591.
Tabbed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the 2021 edition of the tournament field includes 41 teams and will be played at two courses. Following Monday's second round, the top 19 teams will play for the championship at Cougar Point during the final round, while teams 20-41 will play for a flight championship at Oak Point.
Final round action from the Palmetto State continues Tuesday, March 2, at 8 a.m. Eastern will be paired with UNC Asheville and The Citadel with tee times off No. 10. beginning at 9:50 a.m.
