Swim & Dive Concludes EMU Last Chance Invite

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team closed out the EMU Last Chance Invite, Feb. 27, at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles welcomed Mid-American Conference opponents Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo, as well as Oakland University, over the past two days.

In the preliminary session, senior Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) started the morning winning the first event, the 400 IM, in 4:23.53. Classmate Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) picked up her second preliminary win of the meet with a season-best 2:03.08 showing in the 200 butterfly, while Hofmann came off her 400 IM performance to finish second with a time of 2:04.67 in the event, also a season-best.

In the finals, Hofmann defended her preliminaries title, swimming a career-best 4:21.86 in the 400 IM to win the event title.

On the springboard, EMU continued its strong season showing, with freshman Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) earning her first collegiate victory, winning 3-meter diving. The newcomer finished at the top of the preliminary field with a score of 293.10, and taking the event crown with a personal-best 300.15. With the win, an Eastern Michigan diver has won all but one 1-meter or 3-meter event they have competed in this season (3-meter diving at the UB Diving Invite, Feb. 21).

Joining Hughes on the podium was senior Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green), who took second with a career-best 289.10, sophomore Keira Veltigian (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) in third place (278.90), and senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) (278.50) in fourth place.

The Eagles return to action Saturday, March 6 as they take on MAC foe Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
