ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team fell to Ohio University, 191-108, March 6 at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
Eastern started off the meet with a win, with the quartet of senior Avrie Stewart (Menominee, Mich.-Menominee), sophomore Kayla Whitehead (Ottawa, Ontario-Colonel By Secondary), and seniors Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) and Meike Staffedlt (Niedersachsen, Germany) combining for a winning time of 1:45.95 in the 200 medley relay.
In the 200 butterfly, senior Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) picked up her first win of the season in the event, swimming a 2:05.26 for the top-spot finish. The Ada, Mich. native also added a career-best 100 freestyle performance, clocking in at 54.58.
Stewart and Staffeldt added a pair of runner-up finishes to go along with their 200 medley relay win. Stewart's times of 58.28 in the 100 backstroke and 2:06.95 in the 200 backstroke were each good for second place, while Staffeldt finished the 50 freestyle in 24.09 and 100 freestyle in 52.50 for the runner-up spots.
Diving continued its strong season showing, sweeping both events in today's competition. Sophomore Keira Veltigian (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) won both 1-meter and 3-meter, registering career-best scores of 297.60 and 298.20, respectively, for her first sweep of the season. Freshman Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) finished in second place both times, scoring 288.55 in 1-meter and 293.00 in 3-meter.
Eastern Michigan senior divers Bethany Berger and Micaela Schempf will begin competition at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships tomorrow, March 7, in Lexington, Ky., beginning at 10:30 a.m. The swim squad will return to the pool Saturday, March 27 against the University at Buffalo.
