The diver becomes the program's 15th NCAA Championships qualifier
LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University senior diver Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) punched her ticket to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on the first day of the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, March 7, at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
Finishing in sixth place in both the preliminary and final rounds of 1-meter diving, Berger scored 279.05 in the prelims and finished with an overall score of 551.10 to secure her bid as one the seven qualifiers from Zone C. The senior becomes the 15th NCAA Championship qualifier in program history, and ninth from the diving side. She becomes the first diver since Alli Shereda competed at the 2018 event in 3-meter.
Advancing to the final round for the second consecutive season at Zone C's, Berger finished the 2020 prelims in 15th place with a 261.20 mark, but did not get to compete in the final round due to the competition being called due to COVID-19.
Fellow upperclassman Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green) finished the preliminaries in 20th place, narrowly missing the top-18 that advance to the finals, scoring 239.20. Schempf improved 12 spots from her 2020 finish, where she finished in 32nd place.
Berger and Schempf will resume competition tomorrow, March 8, in 3-meter diving. The event is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
