The junior will battle the best in the country in Tallahassee, Fla., Nov. 20

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) is set to represent the Eastern Michigan University cross country program at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this Saturday, Nov. 20. The national meet, hosted by Florida State University, will be run at the Seminole's Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. The men's 10K is scheduled to begin at 11:10 a.m. and will be aired on ESPNU.

"Excited to see what I can do against the top guys in the NCAA and hopefully come away as a Cross Country All-American," said Magnusson.

To earn All-American status this weekend, Magnusson must finish in the top-40, a feat that has not been accomplished by an Eastern runner since former Eagle Nick Raymond (31st - 30:18.9) did so in 2016. Moreover, a top-40 placement would make him the 16th male EMU runner to garner All-American distinction.

The last female runner from Eastern Michigan to be named an All-American was Eagle Jordann McDermitt who finished 24th at the 2016 6K championship race in 20:14.6, Nov. 19. Furthermore, the last EMU team to compete in the national showdown was the women's team in 2017, finishing 27th with 603 points, Nov. 18.

Magnusson's appearance at the NCAAs will be his first, however it will not be his first time competing at the Apalachee Regional Park course. The Eagles trekked to Florida for the FSU XC Open earlier in the season where Magnusson took seventh with a season-best time of 24:03.7 in the 8K.

However, this race will be larger with the addition of another loop. The men's collegiate championship division course is contested over four loops, beginning with two circuits around identical 3000m circuits, followed by a pair of 2000m circuits.

The junior is the only representative of the Mid-American Conference in the men's 10K this year. Last season, junior Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) was selected for the championship race as an at-large bid. In the title race, Payne crossed the finish line in 32:26 to grab spot No. 172 in his national race debut.

The Green and Yellow harrier has put together a strong season, including an individual MAC title with an 8K time of 24:05.7, Oct. 30, and all-region honors after crossing the finish line in 30:10.6 for 18th at the Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 12. By earning the at-large bid, the Iceland native maintains EMU's streak of having at least one harrier at the NCAAs since 2015.
