YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team hosts its home-opener of the 2021 season as Bowling Green State University comes to the Convocation Center Sunday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. This will be the second consecutive season that EMU begins Mid-American Conference competition against BGSU.
The Eagles are coming off a come-from-behind win at the Temple Triangular, Jan. 16, topping both host Temple 194.300-192.400, and Towson, 194.300-193.925. Bowling Green enters the meet 0-1, having lost at Kent State, 194.675-190.550, to open their season.
FOLLOWING THE MEET: Fans can follow the meet through live results or watch on ESPN3, where Tom Helmer and Ashlee Buhler will have the call. Links can be found on the EMU gymnastics schedule page located on EMUEagles.com.
LAST TIME AGAINST BGSU: The Green and White defeated the Falcons, 194.875-193.325, in their first meet of the 2020 season. Eastern dominated on beam, earning 49.100 on the event, led by then-sophomore Caitlin Satler's 9.875 performance.
The bars squad did their part as well, totaling a score of 48.800 with then-junior Jada Rondeau securing a score of 9.850 for first place on the apparatus.
In total, EMU had seven scores of 9.800-or-higher while then-junior Brianna Price earned a career-high 9.775 on beam.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS: In their first meet of the season, the Falcons lost to the Golden Flashes, 194.675-190.550. BGSU's top scorers of the night were Elena Lawson on vault and Alexandra on beam, both scoring 9.8's, and their best event of the competition was vault, scoring a 48.025.
Bowling Green had two all-around competitors in Taylor Jenson and Elena Lawson. Jenson won the all-around competition with a score of 38.600 in her first collegiate meet, after missing much of the 2020 season with an injury. Lawson claimed second place on vault, scoring 9.800, and earned a personal-best score in all-around of 37.675.
IN WEST PHILADELPHIA, BARS WERE RAISED: The Eagles set the bar high in their comeback victory in Philadelphia at the Temple Triangular, Jan. 16.
Eastern started the night on bars where seniors Jada Rondeau and Cortney Bezold claimed first and second scoring 9.850 and 9.825, respectively. The squads 48.725 made them the early frontrunners moving to beam. In the second rotation, Towson leapfrogged EMU by .075 of a point, 97.150-97.075. Junior Caitlin Satler grabbed the team's second first-place finish of the night, hitting 9.825 on the balance beam.
The story remained the same through three rotations, with Towson in front, 146.050, Eastern Michigan in second, 145.450, and Temple in third, 143.450. It was in the final rotation that EMU turned up the heat by posting their best event score of the night on vault, 48.850. Sophomore Hadyn Crossen showed up big, nailing a 9.825 on her vault to earn second place, and gave the team the push to claim first in the meet. Junior Carly Kosanovich posted a career-high on the event as well, scoring 9.725.
Closing out the night, the Green and White finished first, 194.300, Towson second, 193.925, and Temple third, 192.400. The Eagles were also the only team in the competition to score 48.000-or-higher on each event.
25-OF-61: Eastern finds itself tied for 25th in the nation after the first week of gymnastics competition in 2021. EMU 's team score of 194.300 was enough to crack the national ranking ahead of schools like Penn State (28), Nebraska (29), and Pittsburgh (31).
DON'T INSULT THE VAULT: The Green and White averaged a 48.350 from its vault squad in the 2020 season, the team's lowest average of the four events. However, vault was the Eagles' best event in their first meet of the 2021 season, scoring 48.850. The score not only assisted in completing the comeback for first place in Philadelphia, but also puts Eastern's vault lineup at 24th in the nation.
The vaulters were led by sophomore Hadyn Crossen in her first collegiate competition, hitting a massive 9.825 to claim silver in the event. Additionally, junior Carly Kosanovich earned a career-high of 9.725.
THE MOVERS AND THE SHAKERS: Eastern Michigan has movers and shakers this season as 10 gymnasts rank within the top-10 with 13 spots across the four events in the Mid-American Conference.
