AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University Track & Field program collected 11 total event victories and 21 top-three finishes at the Akron Quad Meet today, Jan. 15, inside the Stile Athletics Field House. The meet featured competition against three of EMU's Mid-American Conference opponents: the University of Akron, the University at Buffalo, and Kent State University.
The men's team earned a trio of individual victories and placed second overall with 131.50 points, as the Zips took first in their home gym with 167. Meanwhile, the women captured the top spot at the meet, besting second place Akron 168-125.50.
Senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) now boasts the EMU record in the weight throw with an incredible heave of 22.28m. The Indiana native's feat dethroned former Eagle Anthony Jones, who previously set the record in 2016 with a 21.84m toss. Also earning a victory in the field was senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) who won the shotput with a distance of 17.03m.
On the track, junior Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton) ran an electric 8.13 to claim the top spot in the 60m hurdles. In total, the men cracked the top-three in 10-of-13 events, highlighted by two runner-up finishes by sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College), who finished with a one mile time of 4:14.48. He ran the 3000m in 8:21.94.
On the women's side, the Green and White dominated the competition with eight event victories (seven individual, one team). The Eagles recorded top-three finishes in 11-of-14 events, including stellar performances in the track events. The women dominated in the 60m hurdles as junior Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) took home the gold with a blazing 8.76, followed by teammates junior Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) (8.96), redshirt sophomore Brenna Cavanaugh (Bentleyville, Pa.-Bentworth) (9.05), and junior Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) (9.24).
Sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) picked up right where she left off last season, as she won the 60m dash with a time of 7.53, just .03 off of her 2020 MAC Indoor Championship-winning mark. Meanwhile, junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) was major contributor on the night, as she was the 400m champion and helped lead EMU to a 4x400m relay victory in a 3:56.04 clip. Graduate student Karlie Swanson (Coffs Harbour, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) absolutely blew away the competition in the mile as her 5:04.91 mark was nearly 14 seconds faster than the runner-up.
Senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's), last year's high jump title winner at the MAC Indoor Championships, continued her winning ways as she flew 1.68m for the top prize. Newcomer graduate student Alisha St. Louis (D'abadie, Trinidad and Tobago-St. Francois Girls College (Johnson C. University)) also displayed her skills in jumps as she bounced into first with a distance of 11.51m. Equally impressive in the field was senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) who produced a weight throw of 18.33m, the third-farthest weight throw in program history. For Clarke, she now holds all top three spots in EMU's weight throw category (19.37m, 19.28m, and 18.33m)
Up next, the Eagles will return to Michigan for the Mike Lints Alumni Open Saturday, Jan. 23. The event will begin at 1 p.m. The meet is hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.
