ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University Track & Field program won eight total events and posted 26 top-three finishes at the Mike Lints Alumni Open Saturday, Jan. 23, inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. The meet was hosted by Grand Valley State University and featured three Mid-American Conference schools alongside EMU was Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan. Besides GVSU, Northwood University was the only other Division II institution in attendance while Hope College was the lone Division III school.
"It was great to get another chance to compete," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We had some nice highlights in certain areas and a few struggles in other areas. The men's distance runners and the throwers had a strong showing. We will keep working towards a total team performance as the weeks go on."
The men's team earned five total events wins, two on the track and three in the field. Freshman Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) won the 200m for the Eagles with an explosive 21.84 clip. Meanwhile, junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) paced all runners in the 3000m, clocking in at 8:05.34. Sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) also had a great 3000m run as he set a career-best with an 8:14.19 time.
In the field, sophomore Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer (Coastal Carolina)) captured the triple jump title with a leap of 14.26m. The South Carolina native was also runner-up in the long jump with a distance of 6.72m. EMU dominated the weight throw with Eagles taking the top-three spots. Graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) took home the gold in the event with a heave of 21.10m, followed by sophomore Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qata-Aspire Academy) (20.55m) in second, and senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) (19.95m) in third. Senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) placed first in the shot put with an impressive 16.65m toss.
On the women's side, the Eagles picked up a trio of wins, beginning with the women's 4x400 team recording another first-place finish with an electric time of 3:52.41, nearly four seconds faster than their first place clip at the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 15. The relay squad consisted of juniors Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek), Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School),Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer), and Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child).
Junior Nina Ward (Farfield, Ohio-Farfield) registered a 1.62m high jump for the win, while teammate Iverson tied for 2nd with a 1.57m mark. Rounding out the wins was senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception), who grabbed the top spot in the shot put with a throw of 15.29m and finished second in the weight throw with a 19.31m heave. Clarke's shot put distance marks a new career-high and now boasts the No. 2 furthest throw in program history, falling short only to former Eagle Brittany Crew's 15.67m in 2013.
The Eagles will be extremely busy next weekend with two meets going on simultaneously. On Friday, Jan. 29, most of the Green and White will be participating in the Sid Sink Invitational hosted by Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Meanwhile, multi-event members of the track and field team will be at Saginaw Valley State for the Jet's Pizza Invitational in University Center, Mich.
