YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team got back in the win column with a convincing 64-46 victory over the University of Toledo Saturday, Feb. 29 inside the Convocation Center.
Junior Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo-Belton) became the 23rd Eagle in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark, tallying 12 points on the afternoon while pulling down four rebounds and tying for the team lead with a pair of assists. Redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) also shined for the Green and White as she scored a team-high 19 points off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting, while adding four boards, an assist, a block, and a steal. From there, fellow redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) notched 15 points and dished out a team-high five assists, while showing three rebounds and a pair of steals.
EMU finished 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, while holding Toledo to a woeful 29.8 percent (17-of-57) efficiency. The Green and White also out-rebounded the visitors, 44-35, and bested the Rockets in points off turnovers (18-2), points in the paint (34-22), bench points (19-7), blocks (5-4)
The Eagles went on a tear to begin the contest, scoring the first seven points of the afternoon and opening up a commanding 13-2 lead with 4:47 to go in the first period. Redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield) then added a layup to give EMU a 15-4 advantage with 2:50 left in the frame, but the Rockets closed out the quarter on a 10-2 run to slice the hosts' lead to 17-14.
The Green and White kept the Rockets at bay throughout the second quarter, as Cardwell added back-to-back buckets to 23-17 with 8:12 left in the opening half. Toledo again brought its deficit down to two, but Combs sank a pair of free throws before junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) drained a layup to extend the lead to 27-21 with fewer than four minutes to go in the second stanza.
UT slowly chipped away at EMU's four-point halftime lead, and eventually captured their first lead of the game, 36-34, with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter. However, the Eagles responded with a 7-0 run lasting nearly three minutes to recapture the lead for good. Hudson started the rally with a layup to make it 36-all, before Lewis knocked down a two-point basket along with a triple to stake the Green and White to a 41-36 with 2:33 left in the period. While Toledo briefly bounced back it a one-possession game, Combs added another jumper to make it 43-38 heading into the final frame.
The Eagles kept the Rockets off the board for nearly three minutes to start the fourth period, as the home side opened up a 48-38 cushion with 7:59 left in regulation. Sophomore Jenna Annechiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) netted her first points of the game, going 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to push the lead to 50-40 with 6:17 to go in the fourth. EMU kept its foot on the gas in the waning moments, closing out the game on a 7-1 run over the final 2:27 to seal a decisive 18-point victory.
It should also be noted that the victory was not the only for the EMU women's hoops family during the afternoon. Senior manager Tre Tiggs' two-year old nephew, Mekhi Seales, took home the annual "Toddler Trot," crown. Although he fell behind in the start, a late fall by a competitor allowed Seales to cruise to victory.
Eastern stays in Ypsilanti to play its final regular-season home game of the year against Western Michigan, Wednesday, March. 4. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
