YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team dropped its final regular season home game of the season to its Mid-American Conference rival, Western Michigan University, 53-49, tonight, March 4. Down by as much as 14, the Eagles (14-14, 9-8 MAC) fought back valiantly but were unable to overcome the deficit.

Redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) led the way in scoring for Eastern Michigan with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. The Oklahoma native's shooting performance marks the ninth time she's reached the 20-point plateau this season. Sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) finished the night with nine points, hitting 2-of-5 from deep, grabbing seven rebounds, and dishing out an assist. Junior Autumn Hudson (Richmond, Ohio-North Union) shot 2-of-3 in the paint for six points while gathering in 10 rebounds. The performance was her eighth double-figure rebounding outing this season. The Ohio product's gritty play marks just the second time all season she wrangled in at least 10 boards, an assist, and a steal.

In the first quarter of play, redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wa.-Garfield) rattled home a contested layup to put the Eagles on the board. Minutes later, Agosto intercepted a pass and took it all the way home for the fast-break bucket. The Green and White stifled the Broncos' offense early on, highlighted by a block by Combs which led to a shot clock violation. Annecchiarico drilled a step-back triple for the Eagles sole three-point score in the first quarter, to take an 11-7 edge. However, Western Michigan fought back with a layup of its own, with three seconds left, to end the period tied at 13.

The Broncos grabbed two scores in the opening minutes of the second frame to take a 17-13 lead. Undeterred, the Eagles went on a 9-0 tear in a three-minute stretch. The scoring stanza was underlined by redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) crossing-up her defender then kicking the ball out to Combs for a three-point basket. Both teams took turns shooting hot as WMU responded with a 9-0 run to close out the first half, 29-24.

Western Michigan expanded its advantage to double-digits with 2:54 left on the clock in the third quarter, during what proved to be a costly cold stretch for Eastern Michigan. After mustering just eight points in the third, the Eagles found themselves down, 43-32, heading into the final quarter. The Green and White came out swinging in the fourth, laying in three baskets on their opening three possessions to cut the lead to five, 43-38. The Eagles continued to chip away, but were ultimately unable to complete the comeback.

EMU outrebounded WMU, 42-39, and shot more efficiently from the charity-stripe, dialing home 16-of-21 (76.2%), compared to 11-of-21 for the Broncos (52.4%). WMU capitalized on the Eagles' errors, scoring 22 points off of turnovers.

The Eagles will wrap-up their regular season as they take on MAC rival Central Michigan University on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 1 p.m. A win in Mount Pleasant, Mich. would mark the Green and White's highest-season win total since earning 22 W's during the 2015-16 campaign.
