No. 4-seeded Eastern Michigan fell to No. 7 Drake, 4-2, in the championship match

DADE City, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — After an impressive run to open the spring campaign, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team lost in the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play final to Drake University Tuesday morning, Feb. 11, by a score of 4-2 on the par 72, 7,153 yard Lake Jovita Golf Course. The fourth-seeded Eagles opened the tournament by defeating No. 5 Loyola University, 4-2, and No. 8 seeded DePaul University, 6-0.

Senior Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin) recorded a perfect 3-0 record in the two-day event. Sudinsky defeated Loyola's Zach Wals, 2&1, before adding a 6&4 win over DePaul's Perry Chong. He rounded the event out with a 1 up decision over Drake's Silvester Tan in Tuesday's finale.

Freshman Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) also went three matches without a loss, notching a 2-0-1 mark for Eastern. After a tie against the Ramblers' Timmy Crawford, he upended DePaul's Stephen Sul and Drake's Lucas Scherf by identical 2&1 scores.

Chase Wicklund got Drake on the board with a 7&5 victory over Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park), while Shayne Patel finished his stellar showing with a 3&2 win over Tyler Rayman (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) to leave Drake one match away from clinching the championship.

Eastern Michigan went dormie with two holes remaining in two of the four remaining matches, putting pressure on Drake to close out one of the other two matches. The Eagles went on to win both of those matches as Pelak and Sudinsky won 2&1 and 1-up respectively.

The Bulldog's secured the third point and the tournament victory when Tim Lim up held onto a one-hole lead to win his match over Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic), 1-up. Additionally, Nick Pittman finished his round with a 2-up victory over Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary).

Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew will  get another crack at Drake in its next tournament, when the program return to action at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 22-24, in Goodyear, Ariz.
