CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – It was an exciting day of on-court action as the Eastern Michigan University tennis team competed in a pair of dual matches at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill, today, Jan. 26. The Eagles started the day hot, earning their first team win of the season over Eastern Illinois University, before facing the University of Illinois in the afternoon.
Match One: EMU 5, EIU 2
EMU was dominant in its first match of the day, defeating EIU by a score of 5-2.
In singles action, three Eagles picked up wins. Junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) led the way at the No. 2 singles spot, earning her first win of the season in convincing fashion, 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) followed suit, dominating the No. 3 singles flight (6-3, 6-4) to pick up her first collegiate win. No. 4 singles player, sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin), also claimed her first win of the season, defeating her EIU-counterpart by a score of 6-4, 7-6.
Although she was unable to pull of the win, freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire sur I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) displayed incredible fight, recovering from a 6-1 first-set setback to force her match into a decisive third frame. She ultimately fell, 4-1, in the third.
In doubles action, the pair of senior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and Piatek fought to claim a 6-4 victory. Despite facing high-intensity pressure, the duo was able to break its opponents serve to notch a key victory. Elsewhere, the pair of Popma and Ganesan played nearly-perfect tennis, cruising to a 6-1 victory and helping to seal EMU's 5-2 team victory.
Match Two: EMU 0, Illinois 7
Despite a promising first match performance, the Eagles were unable to carry momentum into the afternoon. Although seven-of-nine EMU flights tallied single-game wins over the Fighting Illini, no individual or doubles pair was able to secure a match victory.
In singles, it was Mayerova that offered the best challenge to Illinois. After falling, 6-1, in the first set of her No. 1 singles match, she rallied for a four-win second set. Despite falling, her veteran poise certainly showed.
In doubles, Mayerova and Piatek were again strong, narrowly falling to their challengers, 4-3, in a best-of-seven game set.
The Eagles are back on court Friday, Feb. 7, when they head to Evansville, Ind. for a dual match against Southern Indiana. The time for the match will be announced in the week to come. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU tennis, visit EMUEagles.com
