YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team fell late to Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan University, 195.175-194.650, Jan. 24, on Epilepsy Awareness Night inside the Convocation Center. The night was dedicated to Ella Dover, a valued member of the team through Team Impact, with the squad and fans wearing purple in support of Epilepsy awareness.
"Tonight was a great opportunity to put a meet together," began Head Coach Katie Minasola. "We ultimately fell short on beam, but we improved on vault, bars, and floor. We did not come away with the win, but despite that, it was still a special night for the team. Ella (Dover) means so much to us and it was great to honor her."
Starting off on vault, the Eagles took an early lead with a score of 48.725 to Western's 48.700, as senior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) led the way, tying her career-best score of 9.800 on the vault. Freshman Hannah Hartung (Lincoln, Neb.-Lincoln East) and junior Jada Rondeau (Savage, Minn.-Central) aided along the way as they both marked their season-highs with scores of 9.775 and 9.725, respectively. Junior Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and sophomore Kara Roberts (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) added to the overall score with scores of 9.700 and 9.725.
On bars, junior Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) tied her season-high with a score of 9.850, which also won the event. Rondeau was not far behind as she scored a mark of 9.800, taking second place. Roberts landed a season-high on the bars, earning a 9.775. Harden hit a 9.700, as freshman Arileyah Harris (Katy, Texas-Katy) notched a 9.725, tying her career-best. The Green and White maintained its lead, 97.575-97.350 after two rotations.
After bars, the Eagles headed to the beam where Rondeau led with a 9.825, tying for second place. Sophomore Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) marked her season-high, scoring a 9.725. Junior Brianna Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) secured a 9.725, while Roberts scored a personal-best 9.700. After the third event, Western took its first lead of the night with a score of 146.100–145.700.
Finishing on the floor, Eastern was led by Dobronics and Rondeau as the pair struck a 9.825, a season-best for the latter. The pair tied for first place in the event. Sophomore Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and Roberts both hit a 9.800, good for fourth place, which was also a career-high for the Pinckney, Mich. native. Price completed the final rotation with a 9.700. Eastern was unable to pull off the comeback, ultimately falling to MAC-foe Western, 195.175-194.650.
In the all-around, Rondeau took first with a score of 39.175 and Roberts took third, finishing with a career-best 39.000.
The Green and White will compete next on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2, as they travel south to Missouri to take on Lindenwood with the meet starting at 1 p.m. Fans can follow live results on EMUEagles.com, or on Twitter by following the team's account, @EMUGym.
