YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was dropped by Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan University, 89-82, Wednesday, Jan. 22 inside the Convocation Center. Despite holding a small lead going into the final quarter, the Eagles were not able to overcome the Chippewas' hot shooting.
As a result of tonight's game, Eastern Michigan (8-9; 3-3 MAC) drops to .500 in conference play while Central Michigan (13-4; 6-0 MAC) retains its unblemished MAC record. The Green and White's 82-point outing is the most points allowed by CMU thus far in conference action. EMU was more accurate from the field (48.6 percent-to-42.9 percent) but the Chippewas made 11 triples to escape with the victory.
Redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) scored a team-best 19 points while tying her career-high with 11 rebounds. The Oklahoma City, Okla. native's performance marks her second time obtaining a double-double. Freshman Aaliyah Stanley (Boynton Beach, Fla.-Oxbridge Academy) reached double-digits in scoring as well with 13 points while dishing out two assists. Additionally, sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) attained 10 points and registered a steal for the 10th straight game.
Coming off the bench in the first quarter, sophomore Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.-Cardinal O'Hara) helped energize the team by dropping six points (3-of-3 shooting) and three boards in just four minutes. However, both squads would go back-and-forth resulting in a 22-all tie after one quarter of action.
Annecchiarico produced her first three-point basket of the game in the second period followed by a challenging one-handed lay-up minutes later. The native New Yorker finished the quarter shooting 3-of-4. However, for every EMU basket, there was a CMU response. Through the first two quarters, there were five lead changes and seven ties. Central Michigan acquired a 40-38 advantage going into halftime thanks to a hard-fought lay-up with under five seconds remaining.
Stanley helped Eastern construct a lead early in the third quarter with a deep three and an open lay-up created from a dastardly cross-over move. Minutes later, redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) converted on an and-one opportunity to put the Eagles on top by six. Junior Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) hit a deep ball later in the frame, while redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wa.-Garfield) also drained a mid-range shot as time expired to construct a five-point EMU edge.
Central Michigan came out swinging in the fourth quarter as it made four three-pointers in just over four minutes. The Eagles hung around, making some clutch shots of their own, but the Chippewas used free throws the rest of the way to keep EMU at bay, eventually claiming the win, 89-82.
Eastern continues its short two-game homestand Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. as it welcomes the Northern Illinois University Huskies to the Convocation Center.
