 – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team claimed victory over the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, 62-55, today, Jan. 25, inside the Convocation Center. The win over the Huskies marks the first time the Eagles have topped their Mid-American Conference counterpart since March, 2018.

Eastern (9-9, 4-3 MAC) and Northern Illinois (5-13, 1-6 MAC) battled tooth-and-nail in a game where no team led by more than seven points. This conference battle saw 12 lead changes and eight ties through 40 minutes of action. Neither squad shot particularly well from deep (6-21 and 4-23, respectively), therefore, free-throws, second-chance points, and hustle plays were critical. Multiple Eagles stepped up during crucial moments of the game to help the team earn its fourth MAC win.

Redshirt junior Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wa.-Garfield) wrangled in seven rebounds, tying her season-high, three of which on the offensive end. Sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.,-Baldwin) helped control the pace of play by recording five assists. The New York-product now has 11 games registering three or more assists. Redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) displayed her defensive strengths nabbing four steals to mark her ninth-straight game with at least one steal.

Junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) was a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the floor. Hudson was efficient in the paint dropping 6-of-9 for 13 points, while hauling in 10 rebounds. Her double-double performance was her second of the season and third of her career. Additionally, tonight's contest marked the first time this season that the Ohio-native registered a block, steal, and assist in the same game.

Despite a slow start including an over four-minute scoreless stretch, the Eagles offense was revitalized by junior Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton), who drilled a triple assisted by redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)). Lewis went 2-of-2 from deep in the quarter, with sophomore Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) also striking from beyond-the-arc. Annecchiarico showcased her passing abilities, delivering three assists in the first quarter of action.

Freshman Aaliyah Stanley (Boynton Beach, Fla.-Oxbridge Academy) joined the three-point party to put the Eagles on top 22-21, halfway through the second frame. A few possessions later, Hudson navigated her way through the Huskies' defense for back-to-back layups, both dished out by Pineda. A 2:15 scoreless stint for EMU near the end of the second resulted in a one-point deficit at the half.

A gritty third quarter effort by Eastern Michigan was highlighted by a sequence of tenacious plays on both ends of the court. Down by one, Combs grabbed a steal which led to a Hudson layup while being fouled. While the free-throw attempt by Hudson didn't fall, Agosto swooped in for the offensive rebound and nailed a mid-range jumper. Eastern Michigan built even more momentum thanks to an Annecchiarico three-point basket and another Combs steal in the waning minutes of the period. The Green and White finished the third quarter of play having scored 10 points in the paint.

The Eagles took the lead with 3:42 left in the third and did not look back. In crunch time, EMU shined under pressure, shooting 7-of-8 at the line. Six different Eagles scored in the fourth quarter en route to a 62-55 victory. The seven-point win was EMU's largest lead of the afternoon.

The Green and White outscored the Huskies 22-to-15 off the bench, held the advantage in points off turnovers 17-6, and led in points in the paint at 24-to-18.

Eastern hits the road for its next two games, traveling to Toledo for midweek #MACtion against the Rockets, Wednesday, Jan. 29, with the tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. The Eagles will stay in Ohio as they square off against the University of Akron on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m.
