Owings, Nick Jones, provide EMU's two RBIs
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered a series-opening loss at the hands of Western Michigan University today, May 3, at Robert J. Bobb Stadium. A pitcher's duel at the front end, both Eastern (11-34-1; 6-13 MAC) and Western (14-26; 7-10 MAC) were held scoreless through the first four innings, as the two clubs combined for just five hits, all of which were singles.
Offensively, the Eagles struck first. With one out in the fifth inning, senior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) smashed a double down the right field line. With Rensel in scoring position, junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) notched a RBI single to give Eastern its first lead, 1-0. Following Owings' team-leading 12th stolen base of the year, junior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) popped an RBI single, extending EMU's lead to a pair, 2-0, after 4.5 innings.
Although an Eagle reached base in six of the game's nine innings, Eastern was unable to string together at-bats, failing to score after the fifth inning.
On the mound, senior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) got the start for Eastern. The righty was nearly perfect through the first four frames, allowing just two hits in that span. Dialed-in from the start, Shaver busted the Broncos in 1-2-3 fashion in both the first and second innings, respectively.
After Western put up a pair in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a two-run lead, 4-2, Shaver rebounded, tossing the first two outs of the seventh before giving way to the bullpen. In all, Shaver went 6.2 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out one in his effort.
On in relief, senior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmel (Ind.)(Iowa Lakes C.C.)) tossed the final 1.1 innings for the Green and White. Although short, Sparks' effort was a good one, as he kept the Broncos off the board.
In all, Eastern gave up four runs on nine hits. The difference in the game came in the form of an error by the EMU defense in the fifth inning, which allowed Western to score the go-ahead run, 3-2, a lead they would never relinquish.
Eastern returns to action tomorrow, May 4, with a single game against Western Michigan. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. The three-game series concludes Sunday, May 5, with a single game at 1:05 p.m.
