Cameron Cruz highlights offense with first home run of 2019
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Although the sun was shining, it was not a joyful day on the diamond for the Eastern Michigan University baseball team as it dropped the second game of its three-game weekend series at Western Michigan University today, May 4, at Robert J. Bobb Stadium. A lopsided affair, Eastern (11-35-1; 6-14 MAC) found itself down, 6-0, after just one inning of play. Unable to recover, the Eagles eventually fell, 12-2.
With his team down, 5-0, sophomore Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady (Murray State)) came out of the bullpen to slow the Bronco momentum. In his first full inning of work, Cook held Western scoreless, retiring three consecutive batters after WMU notched a lead-off single. Although WMU added a run in the third, Cook was successful in ending the scoring parade as he bounced back to blank the Broncos in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Cook went a total of 4.2 innings in his outing, allowing just four hits and one earned run, while striking out four in his effort.
Redshirt junior Nick Porretto (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva (McHenry C.C.) and sophomores Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) and Shane Eastern (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) also pitched for EMU. Unable to slow the Broncos consistently throughout the game, Eastern pitching gave up 12 runs on 15 hits.
Offensively, the Eagles were outmatched, tallying only two runs on five hits in the contest. While the team was unable to break through, junior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) recorded a successful day at the plate. The captain went 2-for-3 en route to his 10th multi-hit game of the season.
Playing in his hometown, Easter had a solid offensive performance in game two of the weekend series. The Kalamazoo native reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk, and a run scored.
Eastern's best offensive moment of the game came courtesy of senior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.) After Easter drew a two-out walk to keep EMU's seventh frame alive, Cruz blasted his first home run of the season, a line shot over the left field wall, giving the Eagles their first runs of the game, 12-2.
Despite the late-game blast from Cruz, Eastern was unable to mount a comeback, failing to score in the final two frames of the 12-2 setback.
Eastern closes its weekend series against Western Michigan tomorrow, May 5, with a single game at Robert J. Bobb Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
