Racing begins at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, May 19
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (EMUEagles.com) - After a successful 2019 regular season, the Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team readies for its chance at a conference title at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships Sunday, May 19. The championship regatta returns to the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. for the third straight season.
The Eagles will compete against boats from the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Villanova University, and defending CAA champions Northeastern University. The reigning champions enter as the top seed in the Second and Third Varsity Eight competitions, while Drexel holds the top seed in the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four races.
The Green and White enters the regatta as the third seed in the Varsity Eight race and the fourth seed in the Second Varsity Eight, Third Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four races. Based on its seeding, EMU's Varsity Eight will compete in lane two, while all other boats will race in lane five.
At last year's conference championship, EMU snagged its best finish since 2016, totaling nine points to tie with Villanova for fourth overall. For their efforts in the Eagles' finish, then-sophomore Amanda Flora (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central) and then-junior Sarah Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio-Charles F. Brush) were named to the All-CAA team, tying for the most honorees in program history. Eastern's First Varsity Eight boat finished fourth in its race, while both the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight earned fifth-place marks.
EMU is no stranger to racing on the Cooper River, most recently competing on the body of water at the Cooper Invitational, April 7. Eastern Michigan's First Varsity Eight and Novice Eight boats each took home first place at the event, as the First Varsity Eight's Grand Final performance topped Villanova and Delaware by more than two seconds, while the Novice Eight squad's Grand Final performance bested all other competitors by more than five seconds.
The CAA Championships are scheduled to open with the Third Varsity Eight starting at 10:20 a.m., the lone race of the day that does not help determine the eventual conference champion. That race is followed by the Varsity Four final at 10:30 a.m., the Second Varsity Eight final at 10:40 a.m., and lastly the Varsity Eight final at 10:50 a.m. The award ceremony is set to conclude the event at 11:30 a.m., where the All-CAA team will be announced. A live stream for the regatta will be available here, while live scoring updates will be available here. Frequent updates on the meet's progression can be found on the team's Twitter account, @EMURowing.
