CHERRY HILL, N.J. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team kicked off its spring competition season with two first-place efforts, participating in the Cooper Invitational hosted by Bucknell University Sunday, April 7.
"I was very happy to see the progression from last year—The First Varsity Eight getting their first win of the season, the Second Varsity Eight finishing third outright after not making the Grand Final last year, and the Novice Eight winning both the novice and Third Varsity Eight categories," noted Head Coach Kemp Savage. "We showed a lot of improvement but we are focused on getting faster for next weekend."
The Eagles began their day with the preliminary races, earning three spots in the Grand Finals and one slot in the Petite Finals. EMU's First Varsity Eight and Novice Eight boats both earned the top qualifying times, completing the 2000m in 7:02.04 and 7:33.70, respectively. The First Varsity Eight's performance toppled Colonial Athletic Association foes Villanova University and the University of Delaware by more than two seconds, while the Novice Eight squad's performance bested all other competitors by more than 12 seconds.
The Green and White's Second Varsity Eight boat recorded the third-best preliminary heat time, crossing the finish line in 7:22.90 for the final Eagles' Grand Final qualifying efforts.
Meanwhile, the Varsity Four used a time of 8:48.10 to snag a spot in the Petite finals.
EMU continued its success from the qualifying heats to the finals, earning the top finish in the First Varsity Eight race with a time of 6:57.08. The squad bested its preliminary heat time by almost five seconds in the finals, while topping all CAA competitors once again by more than two seconds. The Novice Eight squad followed suit, earning a first-place effort with a time of 7:20.32, 13 seconds better than its morning heat performance and toppling both Villanova's Third Varsity Eight and Novice Eight, as well as Bucknell's Novice Eight, by five seconds.
"We put together two pretty good races and are excited to go faster later in the Spring," noted Head Novice Rowing Coach Delaney McGuire when asked about the Novice Eight's success Sunday.
The Eagles' Varsity Four boat cut almost 15 seconds from its preliminary effort to secure the top finish in the petite finals, besting the field of competitors by more than 12 seconds.
The Green and White earned a third-place finish in its other Grand Final appearance, as the Second Varsity Eight cut almost a second off its preliminary heat time for a time of 7:21.97 and bronze finish.
The Eagles now look to their next competition at the George Mason Invitational Sunday, April 14, in Fairfax, Va.
