EMU helped lead the CAA to the conference victory in Fairfax

FAIRFAX, Va. (EMUEagles.com) -  The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team continued its spring schedule with three top finishes at the Mason Invitational Sunday, April 14. The Eagles collected event titles in the B Finals of the Second Varsity Eight, Third Varsity Eight, and Varsity four races, and earned a second-place finish in the First Varsity Eight A Final.

The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) took the win in the conference competition with a total of 44 points, besting the Big 12 Conference, who collected 43 points, and the Atlantic 10 Conference, who totaled 18 points.

"We raced well today and saw some big gains from the Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four as well as good consistency from our First Varsity Eight," noted Head Coach Kemp Savage of the Eagles' efforts Sunday. "Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to move some lineups around at the last minute, and I thought all the athletes responded very well to the changes. We are ready to get home and get back to work."

The Green and White kicked off the day with a top finish in the First Varsity Eight preliminary heat competition against CAA foes Villanova University and the University of Delaware, topping both teams by almost 10 seconds with a 2000m time of 6:36.60.  The team's efforts qualified them for the A Final against the University of Kansas and St. Joseph's University, where the Eagles finished second with a time of 6:41.61, just seven seconds behind KU.

The Second Varsity Eight followed with a second-place finish in their preliminary CAA heat, collecting second-place time of 6:49.52, the third-fastest effort of the preliminary heats from all three conferences which qualified the boat for the B Final. The afternoon saw the squad top West Virginia University and Duquesne University by more than 15 seconds, collecting a time of 6:55.40.

EMU's Varsity Four then hit the water for its conference competition, where the boat finished second to Villanova, registering a time of 7:44.44. In the B Final, the Eagles once again surpassed WVU and Duquesne, marking a time of 7:48.80.

Rounding out the Eagles' racing efforts was the Third Varsity Eight, who's preliminary heat was not conference-based, but pitted teams from all three competing conferences against each other for four sports in the A final. EMU recorded the fifth-fastest qualifying effort with a time 7:18.21, good for a spot in the B Finals. Eastern then recorded a 7:14.20 2000m performance in the Finals, besting its preliminary time by four seconds and topping boats from St. Joe's, Delaware, and Duquesne by 11 seconds.

The Green and White take a week's break from competition, next hitting the water for the MACRA Championships Sunday, April 28, in Grand Rapids, Mich. To keep up-to-date with all things Eastern Michigan University rowing, follow the team on Twitter @EMURowing.
