Men's Golf Falls to Eastern Kentucky In Match Play Contest

RICHMOND, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team came up short in a match play content against Eastern Kentucky University, 4.5-2.5, Saturday, April 6, at the par 70, 6,664-yard University Club at Arlington.
Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) split his match against Billy Basham to get EMU on the board, while Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) rolled to a 4&3 decision over Tyler Lippert. Meanwhile, Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) edged Wilis Gaer, 1 up, to round of the EMU scoring.
Eastern Kentucky's Erik Lindwall, Edvin Lindgren, Kyle Jury and Austin Bagshaw picked up head-to-head wins. Lindwall beat Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), 4&3, Lindgren won 3&2 against Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin), Jury downed Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego), 3&1, while Bagshaw beat Tony Fuentes (East Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing), 1 up.
The schools competed in teams of seven with each of the matches worth one point to the winner. If the competitors ended up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the seven matches won.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.
EMU returns to stroke play at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 13-14, in University Park, Pa.
