EMU returns to East Lansing, Mich. for the second consecutive season
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will participate in the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University, Friday and Saturday, April 5-6.
EMU looks to build off the success from its last visit to the East Lansing, registering three event titles and 11 top-three finishes at the 2018 Spartan Invitational. The Eagles had a representative finish in the top-three in all but one event, and were led by first-place efforts from then-juniors Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio-Eastmoor Academy) and Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), and then-sophomore Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Hertiage), in the 400m hurdles, Triple Jump, and 100m dash, respectively.
The Green and White enter the Spartan Invitational after a stint at the Raleigh Relays, March 29-30. Throughout the weekend, the Eagles totaled four podium-topping performances and 13 student-athletes recorded their top-collegiate efforts at the event. Leading the event title efforts were seniors Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland), Herbet, and Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), as well as junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High), earning first-place finishes in the Javelin Throw, Triple Jump, 400m, and 100m dash, respectively. Underwood's 400m performance of just 46 seconds not only was the fourth-fastest effort by an Eastern Michigan trackster in program history and the top time ran by a conference athlete this season, but the sixth-best time ran in the nation this outdoor season.
Friday's competition at the Spartan Invitational is set to start at 11 a.m. with the Pole Vault, followed by Saturday's efforts beginning at 10 a.m. with the Discus Throw.
