GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team collected five podium finishes at the Mid-American Collegiate Rowing Association (MACRA) Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University Sunday, April 28. In their respective Grand Final performances, EMU's First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight boats earned first-place finishes. The Eagles' Third Varsity Eight posted a second-place effort, while the Novice Eight and Varsity Four squads finished third overall in their afternoon performances.

The team secured a fifth-place finish in the "Lindamood" Team Points Trophy competition, collecting a total of 27 points. The University of Michigan led the way with 48 points, followed by Grand Valley State University with 36 points, the University of Minnesota and Mercyhurst University with 32 points apiece, tied for third, and the Eagles to round out the top-five finishers.

"I was happy with the racing in the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Third Varsity Eight boats," noted Head Coach Kemp Savage. "The other two boats did not have particularly good races and have some improvement to make in the next couple of weeks."

EMU started its morning with top finishes in both of its preliminary heat efforts, as the Varsity Four boat of sophomore coxswain Chloe Elwell (Milan, Mich.-Washtenaw Techincal Middle College), freshmen Brianna Gracey (Dayton, Ohio-Chaminade Julienne) and Anna Eschenburg (Bruce Township, Mich.-Romeo), and juniors Breanna Wirth (Southgate, Mich.-Southgate Anderson) and Karissa Fald (Carvel, Alberta-Memorial Composite) outpaced its competitors by almost 14 seconds with a time of 7:19.20 to earn a bid to the Grand Final.

The Eagles' First Varsity Eight boat followed suit, as the cohort of senior coxswain Christa Maddick (Stockbridge, Mich.-Stockbridge), sophomores Maggie Nied (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and Carly Szymanski (Toledo, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy), juniors Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem), Amanda Flora (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central), MacKenzie Geisler (Mount Horeb, Wis.-Mount Horeb), and Ashly Matzek (Ellsworth, Wis.-Ellsworth), and seniors Baylee Kinkade (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and Addison Oblanas (Seattle, Wash.-Seattle Academy) finished 20 seconds ahead of the field of competition with a time of 6:18.10, securing a spot in the afternoon's Grand Final.

The Green and White's Second Varsity Eight, Third Varsity Eight, and Novice Eight boats all advanced to the Grand Finals without preliminary competition.

EMU's First Varsity Eight ended their day with the top finish in the J. Clark Wray Cup, recording a time of 6:17.70. The squad finished 15 seconds before the second-place boat from Drake University while also cutting almost half a second off their morning preliminary heat effort. Furthermore, Sunday's performance by the First Varsity Eight also improved on EMU's 2017 first-place performance by more than 35 seconds.

Eastern Michigan's Varsity Four finished third overall in its Grand Final, registering a time of 7:14.8. The effort shaved almost five seconds off the boat's preliminary heat time and topped competitors from Miami University, Northwestern University, and Mercyhurst University.

As the afternoon continued, EMU swept first and second place in the Second Varsity Eight Grand Finals, as both the Eagles' Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight boats competed in the event. The Second Varsity Eight crew of sophomore coxswain Eve Melody (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Jerome), freshmen Priscilla Brom (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), MacKaela Geisler (Mount Horeb, Wis.-Mount Horeb), Noelle Haines (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia), Mary Hemgesberg (Freeland, Mich.-Freeland), and Caitlin Rodanhisler (Hopkins, Mich.-Hopkins), sophomores Grace Burke (Columa, Mich.-Benton Harbor) and Diana Spokas (Woodstock, Ill.-Woodstock), and junior Karson Mahaney (Troy, Ohio-Miami East) finished in 6:28.70 for first overall, besting the team's 2017 time by almost 40 seconds and winning the race for the third time since the 2015 season. The Third Varsity Eight boat of freshman coxswain Antinique Kirksey (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth), freshmen Katlyn Dickson (Van Wert, Ohio- Van Wert) and Hannah Barry (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way West), sophomores Sonia Buxton (Round Rock, Texas- Cedar Ridge), Sofia DiVita (Fairview Heights, Ohio), Brynne Harder (Fenwick, Mich.-Saranac), and Leah Huyser (Jenison, Mich.-Jenison), and seniors Mia Forman (South Pasadena, Calif.-South Pasadena) and Stephanie Lamphear (Chesapeake, Va.-Great Bridge) followed closely behind the Second Varsity Eight with a time of 6:49.50 for second place.

The Novice Eight boat of Kirksey, Brom, Dickson, Eschenburg, Gracey, Geisler, Haines, Hemgesberg, and Rodanhisler placed third overall in their Grand Final, recording a time of 6:38.60. Due to timing issues, the race was split into two heats, the first racing for the first and second place finishes, and the second racing for the overall bronze finish. The Eagles raced in the second heat, earning the top mark to secure third overall in the event.

Eastern Michigan takes a week off from competition, next competing in the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Penn. May 10-11. To keep up-to-date with all things EMU Rowing, make sure to follow the team on twitter @EMURowing and visit the team's web page on EMUEagles.com.
