Eagles tally seven hits but strand eight in Friday setback

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered a series-opening loss at the hands of Ohio University, 6-1, in a Mid-American Conference game played under the lights at Oestrike Stadium, April 19.

An early surge in the first saw the Bobcats (11-24, 6-7 MAC) tally the game's initial runs and take its first lead, 3-0. The Ohio offense continued its success in the fifth, adding an additional two runs and extending its lead to five, 5-0.

The Eagles (8-30-1, 3-10 MAC) were stagnant at the plate, unable to score until the sixth. With a runner on third, junior Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) poked a sacrifice fly to left field that brought in junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and gave Eastern its first run of the contest, 5-1.

Peggs delivered the sole RBI for the Eagles, ending his night 1-for-3 at the dish. Redshirt sophomore Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) notched two singles in his 2-for-4 effort, while junior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) also collected two hits, adding a single and a double for the Green and White. In addition to scoring EMU's only run, Owings went 2-for-4 at the plate, raising his batting average to .348 on the season.

On the hill, four Eagle pitchers saw action. Sophomore Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) started the day for the home team, racking up three strikeouts through four innings of work. Senior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) and sophomore Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) tossed innings five-through-seven, respectively. Redshirt junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) closed out the game for EMU as he tossed the final two frames. Hester did not allow a run.

In total, the Bobcats scored six runs on 12 hits. Despite racking up seven hits of its own, Eastern was unable to capitalize, scoring just one run and leaving eight men on base in the 6-1 setback.

The Eagles continue the three-game series against Ohio with a single game, Saturday, April 20. First pitch has been pushed back to 4 p.m. with rain anticipated at Oestrike Stadium.
