EMU looks to continue momentum after two top finishes to open the 2019 season

FAIRFAX, Va. (EMUEagles.com) - Coming off a strong showing at the Cooper Invitational, April 7, the Eastern Michigan University rowing team returns to action at the George Mason Invitational, Sunday, April 14.

The Eagles most recently competed at the Mason Invitational in 2018, claiming two race victories in the C Finals of both the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight races. The First Varsity Eight boat earned its top finish with a time of 6:35.3, besting West Virginia University and St. Joseph's University, while the Second Varsity Eight topped Old Dominion University by five seconds to take home the C Final title.

The Green and White come off a tremendous appearance at the Cooper Invitational, where the Eagles took home two top finishes in the First Varsity Eight and Novice Eight races. After both squads earned top preliminary heat times of 7:02.04 and 7:33.70, respectively, the Eagles bested its First Varsity Eight preliminary heat time by almost five seconds in the finals, while the Novice Eight finished the 2000m 13 seconds better than its morning heat performance. Additionally, the First Varsity Eight topped all Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competitors once again by more than two seconds with a time of 6:57.08. Furthermore, the Novice Eight not only bested all Novice Eight and Third Varsity Eight competitors with a time of 7:20.32, but also toppled both Villanova University's Third Varsity Eight and Novice Eight, as well as Bucknell University's Novice Eight, by five seconds.

The Mason Invitational is structured as a three-conference competition, as members of the Atlantic 10 (A-10), CAA, and Big 12 Conferences will battle to be named the fastest participating conference and the Mason Invite Champion. The Eagles will battle George Mason University, St. Joe's, and Duquesne University from the A-10, the University of Kansas, Old Dominion, and WVU from the Big 12, and will be paired with CAA members Villanova and the University of Delaware on its quest to take home the regatta's title.

The one-of-a-kind regatta is set to begin at 9 a.m., as the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four boats will participate in conference heats to determine the top finisher from each league, who will head to the A Final to compete against the top teams from the other two conferences.  The second heat finisher from each conference will participate in a B final against the second finishers from the other two conferences and so on in a format that should lead to competitive races down the stretch. Regardless of heat finish, each boat will have a chance to score points for their home conference in finals action. The winner of each Varsity Eight final will earn nine points for its home conference, the second finisher will earn six points and the third will get three. That scoring format will occur in the B Final and C Final as well. The Second Varsity Eight scoring format will be 6-4-2, while the Varsity Four format is 3-2-1 in the A, B, and C Finals.

Fans can follow the Eagles' progress via the team's Twitter account, @EMURowing as well as receive nearly live updates from host George Mason's twitter, @GMURowing.
