Strong pitching keeps Eastern in game until the end
Going pitch-for-pitch with the RedHawks, Eastern (5-22-1) kept Miami off the board in five of the final seven innings. After EMU fought to take a one-run lead, 6-5, in the top half of the ninth, Miami scored two runs to complete the three-game weekend sweep, 7-6. Sunday's finale mimicked the series opener, played March 29, in which Miami hit a walk-off single to beat Eastern by the same score, 7-6.
Offensively, the Eagles were balanced, scoring a single run in each of the first four frames. Redshirt sophomore Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) started the game with a single. After reaching on a fielder's choice, junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) showed keen base-running, advancing to third on a throwing error by the Miami second-baseman. During the ensuing at-bat, Owings took advantage of another Miami error, scoring Eastern's first run.
After falling behind, 2-1, Eastern fought to tie the game in the second. With two on and two out, Timko knocked his second hit of the game, an RBI single. Miami refused to back down, adding two runs in their half of the frame to take a 4-2 lead into the third inning.
Down 4-2, after two, Eastern scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to even the score. After leading off the third inning with a single, and advancing to second on a wild pitch, junior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) crossed the plate when freshman Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio.-Archbishop Moeller) poked an RBI single through the right side, brining EMU within one, 4-3. The Eagles tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth inning, when Timko scored as a result of a fielding error by Miami.
In the field, starting pitcher Justin Meis (Pittsburgh,Pa.-Bethel Park) was crucial for the Green and White, keeping Miami off the board in the third, while the EMU offense chipped away at the RedHawk lead. Meis tossed three innings for Eastern, giving up four hits while fanning two.
Coming on in the fourth, sophomore Luke McGuire (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Stevenson) dominated the Miami offense, giving up just one run in three innings on the mound. McGuire's best work came in the sixth inning, with the game tied, 5-5. With two outs, McGuire faced pressure, allowing a walk and two steals, putting the go-ahead run on third for Miami. The young right-hander responded with veteran poise, forcing a fly ball out to end the inning.
Sophomore Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady (Murray State)), provided two innings of near-perfect work, giving up just two hits and zero runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
Despite taking a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, when sophomore Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) notched an RBI single, driving in Owings, the Eagles were unable to contain Miami in bottom of the inning, eventually falling 7-6 in heartbreaking fashion.
Eastern returns to Ypsilanti, where it will open a four-game home-stand, Wednesday, April 3, against Oakland University. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Following the midweek game, Eastern welcomes MAC-foe Bowling Green State University to Oestrike Stadium for a three game set, Friday-Sunday, April 5-7.
