Owings and Cruz record multi-hit games for the Eagles
Despite racing out to a 6-2 advantage after five innings, Eastern (5-23-1) was unable to contain the Oakland offense, giving up nine runs on nine hits in the eighth inning en route to the setback.
Offensively, a pair of Eagles led the way for the Green and White. Junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and senior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) each tallied two hits in the contest. Cruz opened the game strong, knocking a two-RBI single in the first inning, giving Eastern its first lead, 3-1. The senior center-fielder added a double to begin the bottom of the third inning, eventually scoring to extend Eastern's lead to 5-1. In total ,Cruz went 2-for-4 at the plate, adding a walk in his Wednesday night effort.
Owings was impressive as well, going 2-for-3, and drawing three walks in the contest. With his two singles, coming in the second and sixth innings, respectively, Owings improved his batting average to a team-high .355 on the season.
Despite scoring eight runs on eights hits in the game, the EMU offense was unable to keep pace with Oakland, which tallied 12 runs in the final two frames of the game to steal the victory from Eastern.
In the field, a slew of Eagles saw time on the hill, as Eastern used nine pitchers in the contest. Coming on for the third and fourth innings, respectively, sophomore Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady (Murray State) dominated Golden Grizzly hitters. Cook needed just 20 pitches to retire six-straight Oakland hitters in his two innings of work, and allowed no hits in his effort.
Elsewhere, freshman Tyler Koons (Flat Rock, Mich.-Gibraltar Carlson) displayed his promising arm, retiring three-consecutive batters in the fifth inning, his lone inning of work.
Although the Eagles held a 8-2 advantage after seven, the Golden Grizzlies refused to back-down, rallying to score nine runs in the eighth inning. Capitalizing on the momentum shift, Oakland went on to score three additional runs in the ninth, winning the game 14-8.
Eastern returns to action Friday, April 5, for the first game of a three-game weekend series against Bowling Green. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. inside Oestrike Stadium.
