DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team placed third in the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, March 23, hosted by Northern Illinois University. The Eagles score of 195.250 was their second-highest of the season, but it was not enough as the Huskies captured their first team title with a 195.975.
Individually, junior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) was one of four student-athletes to share the MAC title on the floor with a 9.900. Additionally, she is the first EMU gymnast to take home gold in the event since Leah Hashimoto, Natalie Hashimoto, and Sara Wasilenko split the floor championship with a score of 9.900 at the 2002 MAC Championships.
EMU started the meet on bars with sophomore Jada Rondeau (Noorwood Young American, Minn.-Central) leading the way, scoring 9.750. Rondeau was followed by Dobronics' 9.700. Sophomore Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) hit 9.675, while seniors Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) and Carly Clark (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) both posted 9.650. Eastern finished the first rotation with 48.425.
Moving to beam, the Green and White hit big, finishing with 49.050. Dobronics and freshman Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) both posted 9.850, tying for fourth, and Rondeau followed close behind with 9.800. Freshman Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) and sophomore Bri Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) both scored 9.775, a new career-high for Price. Eastern closed out the second rotation at 97.475.
Eastern moved to floor where they scored 40.050. Dobronics crushed another 9.900, tying her career-high for the third time this year, and tying for first on the apparatus. Rondeau and senior Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill.-Belleville) both hit 9.850. Satler earned 9.800, and junior Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) chipped in 9.750.
Closing out the day on vault with 48.725, with Smith leading the way, scoring 9.875, and finishing in second place. Following the Telford, Pa. native was Gresham with a score of 9.850, tying for third. Sophomore Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) earned 9.750, while Rondeau put up 9.700.
In the all-around competition, Rondeau finished with a score of 39.100, good for fourth-place finish. Dobronics ended the day with 39.025, earning fifth-place.
Although EMU did not qualify to the NCAA Regional Championships as a team, the Green and White will now wait to see if any individual student-athletes earn the nod to continue their season.
