EMU readies for first meet of outdoor schedule

ATLANTA, Ga.  (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team begins its outdoor season March 15-16, when it travels to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech University.

The Eagles began its 2018 outdoor campaign at the Baldy Castillo Invite in Tempe, Ariz March 17. EMU was led by its 4x100 relay team, comprised of then-seniors Tyler Brown and Leighton Antonio, then-sophomore Tyler Johnson, and then-freshman Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England), who tied the sixth-best time in program history with a time of 40.26 on their way to a first place finish in the event. Individually, the Eagles were paced by the efforts of Johnson and then-sophomore Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) in the 400m dash and the 110m hurdles, respectively. Johnson's time of 46.98 set a career-best and was enough for a fourth place finish. Findlay finished sixth in the 110m hurdles by matching his personal-best time of 14.63.

The Green and White are coming off an impressive indoor track and field season, which saw the team just miss out on back-to-back conference titles by a margin of 2.5 points at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 22-23. Senior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) notched two individual championships on his way to being named the Conference's Most Valuable Performer. Sophomore Owen Day (Ottowa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) earned the Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer with an individual title in the mile and a career-best 1:52.33 second place finish in the 800m, as well as a leg of the Eagles' championship .

The two-day invitational is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with the Hammer Throw, followed by the 5000m at 9 p.m. to conclude the first day of competition. Day two will start off with field events at 11:00 a.m., followed by running events at 12:30 p.m. For more information regarding this weekend's event, including links to live results, visit the Men's Track and Field schedule page at EMUEagles.com.
