LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — In its first action of the 2019 spring season, the Eastern Michigan  University women's golf team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge on the par 72, 6,068-yards Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club course. The sixth-seeded Eagles cruised No. 11 Purdue Fort Wayne, 5-0, in the opening round before falling short to the third-seeded Falcons of Bowling Green State University, 3-2, in the quarterfinals.

Eastern Michigan will now face No. 5 Illinois State, who fell to  No. 4 Akron in the quarterfinals bracket.

Against the Mastodons, the Eagles made quick work to record the opening round victory with only one match going the full 18 holes. Freshman Green Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) dispatched of Emma Schroeder in just 11 holes for an 8&7 decision, while sophomore Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) need just one more hole for a 7&6 victory over Abigail Carlsen. Senior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) notched a 3&2 win over Holly Anderson and Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) pushed the Eagles over the top with a 3&1 advantage. Junior Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) completed the clean sweep for the Green and White by edging Paige Bird, 1 up.

In the nightcap, Head Coach Stephanie Jennings's crew pushed third-seeded Bowling Green to the limit before falling, 3-2. After falling behind on the opening hole, Sripatrprasite rebounded to take a lead on the third hole of the round and ever looked back en route to a 4&3 win over Julia Durkin. Stevenson rebounded as well to claim the second EMU victory of the match, taking her first lead of the day on the 12th hole of the round to hold on for the 2&1 decision.

Unfortunately, Guilleux and Connelly each dropped their matches putting the overall result on the final match of the round between Apichonlati and BG's Sammi Blackburn. Apichonlati never led for the duration of the match, but pulled within one after winning the 17th hole. However, she was able to get no closer, as the two halved the final hole to give Blackburn and the Falcon's the 1-up victory.

The second day of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge is slated for a 7:50 a.m. start time Tuesday, Feb. 5. Live scoring for tomorrow's rounds are available at Golfstat.com.

If a team tie still exists, the team winner will be determined by comparing the number of holes remaining in each match won:

If a team tie still exists, the team winner will be determined by comparing the halved match or matches.  These results will be determined by a "scorecard playoff" (scores will be compared by the #1 handicap hole) provided all tied matches have played that hole.  Handicap holes will be used until the tie is broken with total scores.
