Women's Golf Takes Fifth at Mid-American Match Play

No. 6-seeded EMU advanced past Illinois State before downing Western Michigan
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team wrapped up the Mid-American Match Play Challenge on the par 72, 6,068-yards Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club course Tuesday, Feb. 5. EMU finished the event in fifth-place after advancing past No. 5 Illinois State on tiebreakers and downing No. 7 Western Michigan, 3.5-1.5, on the final day.
The finish was the Eagles' best at the event since posting back-to-back runner-up showings in 2015 and 2016.
Sophomore Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) paced the EMU attack in Florida, posting a 4-0 record that included a commanding 7&6 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, a 4&3 decision against Bowling Green, and a 3&2 victory over WMU. Junior Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) was also undefeated in four matches with wins over the Mastodons, Falcons, and Broncos to go along with a tie versus the Redbirds.
In Tuesday's first match, the Eagles needed tiebreakers to advance past ISU after the schools each posted two victories. Sripatrprasite edged Paige Seiser, 1 up, while Stevenson halved her match after dropping her 18th hole to fall into a tie with Morgan Savage. However, it was senior Penelope Guilleux's (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) 6&5 win that proved to be the difference in the match that helped the Eagles advance after closing out her opponent on the 13th hole.
In the finale, Stevenson built a 4&3 advantage en part to taking four holes on the back side to close out on the 15th. Sripatrprasite and freshman Green Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) each turned in 3&2 wins to push Eastern over the top against the Broncos. Rounding out the match, Guilleux fell, 1 up, while Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) rallied with a win on the 17th hole to knot the score to finish all-squared.
Schools were competing in teams of five with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the five matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the five matches wins.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.
The Eagles return to action next at the Rio Verde Invitational, Feb. 22-23, in Rio Verde, Ariz. In 2018, Connelly finished tied for fifth at the event with a 223 (77-75-71) and Guilleux took seventh with a 224 (73-74-77), as the Eagles were one of just two teams in the tournament to boast a pair of top 10 finishers.
