Women's Golf's Spring Season Begins with Match Play Challenge

No. 6-seeded Eagles open two-day tournament against No. 11 Purdue Fort Wayne

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team returns to action for its spring stanza Monday, Feb. 4, when it travels to Lakewood Ranch, Fla. to tee off in the Mid-American Match Play Challenge. The Mid American Match Play Challenge is just the sixth time the squad will participate in a match play format tournament. The tournament is hosted by Bowling Green State University and takes place at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.
The two-day event will consist of 54 holes of match play competition. Teams are seeded one through 12 based upon the Golfstat rankings and then placed into a bracket. All teams are guaranteed three matches with losing teams from the first and second rounds continuing to compete in a consolation bracket. Each team match will consist of five individual matches.
The first round will begin Monday at 7:50 a.m. followed by the second round at approximately 12 p.m. The third and fourth round matches will be played Tuesday, Feb. 5, with a 7:50 a.m. start.
There will be a total of seven Mid-American Conference teams participating in the tournament, including Akron, BGSU, Central Michigan, EMU, Northern Illinois, Ohio, and Western Michigan. Also joining the action is Florida Gulf Coast, Illinois State, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Western Illinois.
In the first round, the sixth-seeded Eagles tangle with No. 11 Purdue Fort Wayne. The winner advances to play third-seeded Bowling Green, while the loser will battle either No. 8 Ohio or No. 9 Central Michigan.
Last year, the ninth-seeded Eagles fell to No. 8 UNC Asheville, 4-1, in the opening round before knocking off the 10th-seeded Flyers of the University of Dayton, 4-1, in the consolation bracket. In the finale, EMU fell to No. 11 CMU, 3-2, to wrap up the tournament with a 1-2 mark.
