Eastern Defeats Detroit Mercy, 55-51 at Calihan Hall

Montero scored a career-high 16 points
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team battled on the road to defeat the University of Detroit Mercy, 55-51, Saturday, Dec. 7, in non-conference action inside historic Calihan Hall.
The Eagles (8-1, 0-0 MAC) led the Detroit Mercy Titans (1-7, 0-0 HL) for the entire contest and led by as many as 13 points in the game. The Titans fought back in the second half, pulling to within four with 1:15 left in the game, but the Eagles defense closed out the contest.
The Eagles started the game hot by going on a 6-0 run with two lobs for dunks by redshirt senior Boubacar Toure (Dakar, Senegal-Phase One Academy (Grand Canyon)) and redshirt junior Ty Groce (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln). EMU led by as many as 13 in the first half and were led by junior Yeikson Montero (Santo Domingo,-Dominican Republic-Redemption Christian Academy (Pensacola State)) who scored 13 in the half, shooting 3-of-4 from deep. Groce was close behind, scoring 10 in the first half to go along with his five rebounds and two steals. A late 9-2 run by Detroit Mercy cut the Green and White's lead down to six. Eastern withstood the storm by the Titans with back-and-forth buckets to enter halftime still up by four.
Eastern continued to push in the second half, hitting 5-of-6 shots out of the break. On the defensive side of the ball, EMU held the Titans scoreless for 3:56, and allowed them to hit only 1-of-10 to start the second half. However, the Titans would not go away, going on a 5-0 run and pulling within four. UDM would not back down as they hit a three with 1.9 seconds left, but it was not enough as Eastern finished the game ahead, 55-51.
EMU closed out the game with Montero leading the way with a career-high 16 points, shooting 3-of-5 from deep and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while Groce also put up 16. The Ypsilanti, Mich. native shot 6-of-8 from the field, and added three steals and a block. Toure chipped in eight points with 10 rebounds and four blocks, which ties his career-high for the seven-foot center. The Eagles finished shooting 46.3 percent from the field and held UDM to shooting 23.3 percent. The Green and White also outscored the Titans in the paint, 24-9, as well as in points off turnovers, where Eastern bested Detroit Mercy 21-17.
The Green and White take a short break but are back in action at the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. against Northeastern University. The game can be viewed on ESPN+ or listen in on WEMU 89.1.
