YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team needed all 40 minutes to tame Northeastern University when the two teams met for a Tuesday evening clash at the Convocation Center, Dec. 17. A down-to-the-wire affair, EMU eventually pulled away and won the contest, 60-55. Red hot to start the 2019-20 campaign, the victory propelled Eastern to a tie for a program-best 9-1 start to the season, marking the first time EMU has accomplished that feat since the 1996-97 season.
Tied at 48 with 4:25 left to play, Eastern (9-1) closed the game on a 12-7 run, outlasting its scrappy Colonial Athletic Association-competition to stay undefeated on the Convocation Center Floor.
The Eagles were led by junior Noah Morgan (Mount Vernon, N.Y.-Mount Vernon (Northwest Florida State)), who contributed a team-high 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. The Mount Vernon, N.Y. native scored in double-digits for the seventh time this season. Teammate Ty Groce (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln), a redshirt junior forward, added 10 points and tied for the team lead with six boards.
Used to showing off its nationally ranked defense, it was the Eastern Michigan offense that began the game on a high note, as it took the Eagles just 27 seconds to get on the board. Morgan opened the scoring effort, cruising through the lane for a quick bucket on EMU's first possession. A back-and-forth bout in the first half, the Eagles trailed by four, 17-13, before making their best run of the opening stanza, a 12 point sprint to go ahead eight, 25-17. The run was initiated by a five-point stretch from Yeikson Montero (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic-Redemption Christian Academy (Pensacola State)). The junior guard drained a triple before swiping a Huskie pass and finishing at the other end.
Defensively, the Eagles remained disciplined. Another Huskie turnover led to an easy two-hand slam by EMU big man, redshirt senior center Boubacar Toure (Dakar, Senegal-Phase One Academy (Grand Canyon)). Up 18-17, Montero drew a charge to give EMU yet another possession. This time, it was junior sharpshooter Thomas Binelli (Bologna, Italy-Bergen Catholic (Monroe College)) that took advantage, draining a triple to extend the Eagle advantage, 21-17.
Despite falling down by eight, 25-17, Northeastern showed resolve, going on an 12-4 run of its own to tie the game at 29 apiece with 18 ticks left in the half. In all, the first frame featured five ties and eight lead changes. Despite the scoring swings, EMU took a two-point lead into the break, 31-29.
Out of the locker room, it was the Eagles that again struck first. Picking up where he left off in the first half, Morgan scored the first bucket in the final frame, putting the Eagles up four, 33-29, in the early going.
After another Binelli three extended EMU's lead to 43-37 with just over 10 minutes remaining, the Huskies again fought back and reclaimed the lead, 45-44. Undeterred, EMU struck back in its ensuing possession, when Toure again finished with a powerful dunk to give the Eagles the advantage, 46-45.
Although Northeastern tied the game with 18 seconds left, 48-48, the Eagles proved too strong, retaking the lead for good courtesy of a Groce put-back, 50-48, with 4:24 remaining in the game. The Huskies showed fight, but EMU eventually claimed the five-point win.
Eastern is back on the court Saturday, Dec. 21, for an in-state clash with Michigan State University. Tipoff from the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
