Women's Cross Country Lands Seven on Academic All-MAC Team

Olivia Chandler was one of 12 MAC student-athletes to record a perfect 4.0 GPA
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team had seven student-athletes selected to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office announced today, Dec. 5.
Miami and Ohio paced the MAC with 10 student-athletes on this year's squad. From there, NIU, Toledo and Western Michigan each landed eight honorees, while Ball State, EMU, and Kent State each received seven nods.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Receiving the honor for the Eagles were: graduate student co-captain Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), redshirt senior co-captain Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School), senior Abbigail Stemple (Mason, Ohio-William Mason), junior Madison Distelrath Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead), and sophomores Olivia Chandler (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton), Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), and Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson),
A co-captain and a sport management major with a 3.88 GPA, Cizmas earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC Team for the fourth consecutive year. The Clinton Twp., Mich. native is a three-time First-Team All-MAC selection, as she finished in second place at the MAC Championships, Nov. 2 with a time of 21:28.0. She then went on to earn All-Great Lakes Region honors for the second straight campaign, cutting nearly a full minute off her 8K time as she ranked 10th at 20:33.3. Cizmas became the first runner in program history to compete at four national meets, wrapping up her distinguished career with an 88th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Nov. 23.
Fellow co-captain Smith, a business administration major with a 3.90 GPA, made the Academic All-MAC Team for the first time with the Green and White. She was the runner-up at the George Dales Invitational, Sept. 6, with a personal-best 5K time of 17:28.0, and later set a career-record 6K time of at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational, Oct. 5. Most notably, Smith earned Second-Team All-MAC honors for the second straight season after finishing in ninth place at the MAC Championships, Nov. 2, with a time of 22:13.1.
A native of Mason, Ohio, Stemple is a secondary education major with a 3.81 GPA. Although she did not compete during the previous two seasons, Stemple went on to set a personal-best 6K time at the Under Armour Pre-National Invitational, clocking in at 25:55.3.
Distelrath, an intended exercise science major with a 3.61 GPA, has been selected to the Academic All-MAC Team for the second consecutive campaign. The Fort Wayne, Ind. Native finished eighth at the George Dales Invitational, Sept. 6, with a time of 18:44.0. She also played a critical role in helping EMU capture its fifth straight MAC title, Nov. 2, narrowly missing out on an All-MAC nod when she placed 15th with a time of 22:29.2.
An elementary cognitive impairment major, Chandler is one of a dozen MAC student-athletes to record a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Brighton, Mich. native set a personal-best 6K time at the 2019 Under Armour Pre-National Invitational, Oct. 19, placing 59th as she crossed the finish line at 23:30.0. Six days later, Chandler logged her best 5K performance at the EMU Fall Classic, as she claimed 35th spot with a time of 19:03.1.
Seifert, a biology major with a 3.97 GPA, kicked off her sophomore campaign with a ninth-place finish at the George Dales Invitational, Sept. 6, setting a personal-best 5K time of 18:49.8 in the process. Additionally, Seifert achieved her fastest 6K time at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational, Oct. 5, finishing with a time of 22:05.6.
An intended exercise science major with a 3.63 GPA, St. Bernard also finished in the top-10 at the George Dales Invitational, Sept. 6, ranking sixth with a time of 18:39.3. From there, the Newport, Mich. native set a personal-best 6K time at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational as she clocked in at 22:03.5.
